This one's for you.
Dear Middle School Gym Teacher:
Remember after I was beaten up by those two girls in the 8th grade? Remember when I used to sit outside the office and I was so scared and so sick to my stomach and my whole motivation was getting out of the school before they could catch me? Remember when I used to ask to be sent home because I felt sick every day?
Remember when you took me outside to the ramp by wood shop and you looked very hard at me and said:
"Alia, you aren't sick. What you are is afraid and totally stressed out and that is natural. You had something really bad happen to you and what you are feeling is totally okay."
And you let me cry and tell you how scared I was. And that even though they hit me, I didn't hit them back because I said I wasn't going to fight and I meant it.
Then you led me back inside and back to my class.
Mr. Gym Teacher, I used to make fun of you with all the other kids. On that day, you were my hero. I just though you should know.

Dear HS math teacher:
You remember that day, early in the year when I quietly asked a question and you answered in front of the whole class that if I was asking that I had no business being in your math class?
You were right. And at that point when you chose to embarrass a student rather than foster their faltering love of math--you succeeded in pushing another student away.
Thank you for that.

Mr. Landis - 9th grade algebra, thanks for confusing the living hell out of me and every other kid in the class. But, since your major was phys. ed., I guess you didn't know any better.
Mr. I forgot your name - 8th grade wood shop teacher. I've never been hit that hard in my life before or after that day. Jeebus was my ass sore.

I honestly had never had a good experience with a PE teacher until I subbed for one. (I had a blast--made me want to get my degree in teaching and be a PE teacher)
The next best experience: my son's 8th grade PE teacher. He encouraged Aire Jr to try for sports and then encouraged him to share his abilities with other kids who didn't get it. Even talked to the HS soccer coach to invite Aire Jr to tryouts.
Kudos to my son's 8th grade PE teacher.
