La Salle Bank Shamrock Shuffle (8K), Chicago IL
This was a race I had not planned to run until about a month ago. The fact Deena Kastor was in this race had nothing to do with my changing my mind. To be in the same race as her was a true treat - had I talent to be upfront with her, then it would have been an honor. The fact American men's thon record holder, Khalid Khannouchi, was in this didn't hurt either.
The big thing for me was learning the first two miles or so was the same beginning as the ill-fated Chicago Marathon of last October. I needed to run this one, and do well. I had to exorcise the demons and spit out the bad memories of the marathon. And given the crowd - at 22,500 runners, it's billed as the largest 8K race in the world - I got what I needed. Everything but a PR. Easy running, NO INJURIES, negative splits - where, oh where has this race been?! The race felt good - I was able to adjust speeds as needed, move in, around, and through crowds with little trouble (strangely, I think that is the best thing I do in a race), and I was able to kick it in on the last mile.
From a PM of yesterday:

Little does she know...
Results - Watch time - 42:45, Official time - 42:44.
Placings - Overall, 5,053 of 18,729
................Males - 3,712 of 9,105
................AG - 257 of 653
Splits - 8:49, 8:43, 8:34, 8:25, and 8:13.
And for the record... Deena won the wimmen's race (new course record), but Khalid dropped out (!) at 4.3 miles.

Just think 'G', in future you can casually mention to friends over a drink or two how you went past Khannouchi at the 4.3mile mark
