I ran the Cleveland 10K today, my first 10K race. There were lots of us 10K people there-4,000 or so? Anyways, it was cold, and very windy, but not raining.
We're off at 0820 and I spent the usual first 1/2 mile or so dodging and ducking around people. We start downhill toward the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame when I come across the two guys proudly running with huge American and MIA flags. I recognize Jim Quisenberry with the MIA flag. Jim is a 173rd Airborne Vietnam Vet who is also in the Cleveland Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Association, which my husband belongs to. So I pull up and chat with Jim for a good minute, then wish him well and move ahead. These guys are both Vietnam Vets, so they're pushing 60, and were carrying these huge flags in this heavy wind! Outstanding!
We run by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then around Cleveland Browns Stadium...all heading downhill toward Lake Erie. Not neccessarily a good thing, because now we're going to have to run uphill again. We turn the corner and run up the small incline past the stadium. I have no problem with this, as I train on hills, and I manage to pass a bunch of people on the hill. We turn right, through the warehouse district and then onto the Shoreway Bridge . It's a long incline uphill, which isn't so bad, but the wind is gusting right onto us from Lake Erie. We're running right into the wind.
I've barely hit the apex of the bridge when the first runners are starting back across already...the Kenyans. They all get a huge cheer from everyone going by. (First male was 29.00!!!)
We finally get off this windy bridge and I can now tell how hot I am. At least the sweat is all dried off. We take a nice little flat and non-windy quick tour of Ohio City, where I note a friend of ours is also building townhouses, and then we're back out on the windy Shoreway bridge again!! Now it seems the wind is still in my face, but how can that be since it was in my face the other way? I keep running because that's the only way off the bridge. I still am passing people on the bridge, except Mr. Solon Police (that's what his shirt said) gets away from me. We hit the regular pavement again. I haven't caught a mile marker since mile 2. We hit the last water stop where they are saying 1.2 to go, so I hit the watch and see I'm at 43 minutes. I don't think I can break 50 at this point, but I am not slowing down either. I start to do the old "catch up and pass game". I only look for females, since that's who I am competing against. Maybe I'm even passing some in my age group! Razz I pass a few. We round the last corner and see the finish line! I'm starting to develop a side stitch, but try to run through it and make it to the finish line in 55.15 or something like that.
Splits were
9.53
11.17
22.42 (this was at mile 5, missed the others.)
10.12
My watch said 54.04, but the official clock said 55 or so.
A good race. I felt really good on all parts of the race. I think the wind had a big factor in this. (Or that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.)
Here's the elevation chart http://www.clevelandmarathon.com/race_info/10k_markers.html for the event.

I'm happy with my time, but I thought I could run closer to 9 minute miles. I guess I need I have to compensate for the weather in these races.

Great race Kimba! I ran the marathon relay and ran the first half of the course, which sounds similar to where the 10K went. I was like where did all of these hills come from - those bridges where hilly and it was windy up there!

Congratulations!

Last summer we were in Cleveland, specifically to see the RnR HoF. The wind commanded our attention and respect, and we were just gawking (if that is possible in Cleveland) tourists. Running in that takes a little somethin'-somethin'. Well done, Kimba!
