Let's share some Christmas Memories, good or bad. I have many but the first one that comes to my mind the past few years is sorta sad.
When I was a kid in grade school my parents hung around this family who had 5 kids. We would spend time there on weekends while our parents went out. They had a couple older kids who watched the rest of us. We used to jump on the beds and have a great time. Tommy was my age and he became my first boyfriend. He gave me a ring, it was his birthstone ring and he wore it all the time. We grew apart, never really officially "broke up" or anything though. Anyway, I kept the ring he never asked for it back. I saved it for years in the box of "stuff" I had collected from my childhood/school days. I would come across it when we would move and I would be going through my stuff. About 5 years ago or so I saw Tommy and his wife and their 2 children, a boy and a girl, at a local diner around Thanksgiving. I hadn't seen him in many, many years and had never met his wife or had he met my DH. We sat near each other at the diner, saw each other and waved and said hi, how ya been kind of thing. I thought it was odd though when I came across the ring a couple days later. Then in December a couple days before Christmas, Tommy was killed in a car accident. It's very sad to see people die anytime, but especially around Christmas and having young kids. I was instantly taken back to the incident the month before seeing him and finding the ring again. I had an overwelming desire to somehow give the ring back. I felt it needed to be back to the family, more specifically, to his son.
I took the ring to the funeral home when I went to the visitation but knew I didn't wanna just give it to his wife, that didn't seem right. Going through the line of family was very emotional seeing the kids and stuff. I then took Tommy's dad aside and took the ring from my pocket and put it in his hand. He was crying as he said "OMG, that is Tommy's ring, where did you get it?" I explaind and said I felt Tommy's son should have the ring at some point. He agreed and thanked me for giving it back. It made me feel warm inside to do that, and I think about this every year at Christmas now.
Share some special Christmas memories with us.

Man, that was a sad story. How can anyone top that. I think we need to make a new thread for stupid stories like I have.

I can't really top that "Chicken Soup for the Soul" Moment.
From age 7 through 10 I had the good fortune to live in Italy. In Rome, starting about December 1, one of the Piazzas is filled with vendor's stalls all selling Christmas things like trees, nativity scenes, chocolates, candies. There are usually over 100 vendors ringing the piazza. In Italy (At least when I was there in the late 50's) Christmas was a purely religious holiday.
After Christmas day, all the vendors would change their stock to toys, toys and more toys. This was in preparation for the arrival of the Befana - the kindly witch that brings kids their presents on the day of the Epifany January 6.
I always remember the scenes in the Piazza and the marvelously long winter vacation from December 23 to January 7 when school started up again.

One year I received a secret decoder ring for Christmas. I was so excited! So thrilled! Until I discovered it was a crummy commercial for Ovaltine.

Nope. The ring was hung on a string around the trigger for my new Red Rider BB Gun!
