Posted: 04/14/03 - 10:29 Post subject: Chiropractors
What do you all think of them? I know people have mixed opinions.
Here's why I ask: I had a hip problem in high school that kept bugging me. Well, my back went out one day (another story), and they sent me to a chiropractor. While I was there, I told him that my hip had been hurting me for awhile and he took some x-rays. Come to find out my hips were tilted, one was several mms higher than the other. He 'fixed me up' and got them back to normal and I never felt the hip problem again...until now. I am feeling the same thing I did back then and it is severely effecting my running. I need to do something. Do you think I should let a chiropractor look at it again?
Thanks for reading.
Randy

been going for 7 years. one-3 times a week. Love it. All the kids go too.
Our doc even came to the hospital a few times to adjust Abby, free of charge.
Our guy is all hands on. He does not use any special equipment of anything. They do a great job.

Randy I agree with Joe. I have been going for close to 8 years now, usually I just go when I need it, no pressure from my doc to get in.

Never tried myself, but hear lots of good things from quite a few people. I think they've come a long way from trying to be "cure all" doctors and for the aches you're talking about should be able to help. And since it worked for you before, I'd vote for another visit.

I have an biased, unfounded opinion on them. I think that once you start going that you need to keep going back because you're started a vicious cycle.
Read Joe's and Jon's posts and think about it.

For those that go, does your insurance cover any of it?

I think they are fantastic, they helped me with my bout of IT band....and I no longer go, PH....smartie...
My insurance covers all of it up to a certain number of times. And my chiro was really good about working with me on that. He's fantastic, I wish you were in Houston Randy, I'd send you there.

I would recommend a Chiropractor Rando. I went to one for the first time a few weeks back. After spending the whole winter battling IT problems that were caused by my Orthotics, that a Podiatrist perscribed, he took one look and solved the problem. I had one leg that was shorter than the other. He fitted me with some orthotic right there on the spot. (they were also a 1/3 of the cost of the others I had) I would recommend that you see a Chiro that specializes in Sports med.
As far as insurance goes, this guy is not part of any plan but does bill to all insurance companies. For me that means he will be covered 80% after my deductable is satisfied.
If you are interested in the same guy let me know. I will forward the info!

oddly enough, i started seeing a DC in january cuz he was both a chiro and a PT and my knee was messed up. i mentioned that my neck was cracking and popping and stiff too and had been for months. he treated the neck thing and addressed the knee thing after twice weekly visits for two months. i'd say he fixed my stiff achy neck 100% - my knee is still questionable.
i'd go to one that is reco'd to you. your hip is probably "out" again and i'm betting a few visits might straighten it out again.
check with your policy before you go. they are all different; some really endorse chiros and others completely deny them any benefits at all.
makes me wonder............

A chiropractor is going to use many of the same modalities as a Physical Therapist, however, PTs (in my obviously biased opinion) are going to do a better job of looking at why you are having the trouble and help you prevent the problem from happening again. Plus they are paid for by most insurance companies.
I think chiropractors can be fine when they stick to what they are supposed to do, however, I have seen too many branch out into very questionable (in my mind anyway) treatment.
Also, like PH said some of them have an interest in keeping you coming back. Because of insurance issues PTs do not operate that way.

Randy, my insurance covers 20 visits per year.
PH to answer your question, I used to suffer from migrane headaches (2 to 3 per month) since I started chiro I can count on one hand the amount I have had since. I am not saying its right for everyone, but if it worked for Randy before why not??? Just my honest opinion.

I second all supportive thoughts. I used to work with one when I was in college, and CB is right, they aren't all alike, some of them are real greedy b*stards who only want you to keep coming and they'll try out an quacky stuff on the planet, but mine was great. If the guy you went to before worked for you and there was no pressure to commit to long term stuff or buy funky vitamins and crap, I'd say do it. I had injuries from an old car accident from years before that and he fixed em right up in a short time.
What my doc explained to me, and my studies in physiology can verify, is that the reason you have to go back, at least in the beginning, is to, in part train the muscles surrounding the spine to hold the adjustment. They can "crack you" all they want, but if the muscles are used to your spine being out of alignment, it takes a bit to retrain them to hold the new position. Perhaps a combine with PT might do the trick?? CB, thoughts?

My wife's best friend used to go to one that had her hold the medications, still in the bottle, against her chest so he could sense their 'aura' or some poop like that.
