I'm a skeptic

but have also been having some sciatica pain that numbs my left foot in mile 3-4. So I decided to go to a chiropractor. I called the guy who has a very small office (that used to be a garage to the house) a few blocks from here. It was really just a shot in the dark, but I run by that office so much I thought I'd give him a try. I went today; he spent 45 minutes just talking about what he does and how the spine works. He explained is "Honor System" fee structure: $80 initial fee, kinda like a club membership, then each visit after the first one is on your honor, pay what you can afford. Shocked No insurance accepted. Go as often as you need to, but at least once a week, the $80 covers everyone in the family. How can I go wrong as far as the financial part?

He makes no claims as to any "cures" through his manipulations. His goal is to rid the spine of "subluxations" allowing the electrical impulses of the nerves to flow freely to and from the brain.

I must say I was impressed. I was also manipulated and it felt good.

so what do you think? do you go to one? how's my experience sound?

I'm skeptical about the chiropractic end of it too, but I've got to say WOW about this payment schedule.

I am a skeptic and have never been to one. But I have heard that their reputation is changing as they now have more stringent educational and licensing requirements. I don't know if this is true and I couldn't find any information.

BUT I am so waiting for someone to steal this and use it as their signature line. Razz

Merriam-Webster defines a "subluxation" as

\Sub`lux*a"tion\, n. [Pref. sub + luxation: cf. F. subluxation.] (Surg.) An incomplete or partial dislocation.

I have a hard time believing anyone is walking around with an incomplete or partial dislocation in their spine. Or anywhere else. I have an even harder time believing that your electrical pulses are not flowing freely to your brain. I'm a HUGE skeptic of chiropractors. I think they are really massage therapists in different clothing. If a massage is what you need, then get a massage from a masseur. If you need physical therapy, go to a physical therapist. The only manipulation I see is that of your money being manipulated out of your wallet.

In your case; however, $80 for a massage that's called a manipulation may not be a bad financial deal.

I used to go to the chiropracter very regularily. After a while, my back got stronger and I didn't need to go as often.

My junior year in high school, I messed up my back during marching band. I was going up to 3 times a week. After a while, it was once a week, and then once a month. Now it is just when my back gets sore. When I go, I do notice a sharp difference in my everyday actions and my running (both for the better).

I'm planning on visiting mine in 2 weeks. Should be great leading up to my Sept. 20th marathon and Chicago Marathon. Too bad it won't be before my 5k next weekend. Sad

No, no, no. HUGE difference between the two. Massage therapists only work with soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments). Chiropractors only deal with the hard tissue (bones) and their relationship with each other.

Due to everyday uses and differences between our dominant and non-dominant sides, we become out of alignment. THAT'S what he meant about the "subluxations". And, there are varying degrees of 'partial dislocation'.

As for the nerve impulses, they are flowing freely to his brain, they're just not flowing freely FROM his brain down his left leg, due to the occlusion of his sciatica nerve. Hence the numbness in his left foot.

Shocked

But anyway, I have gone to a chiropracter on and off for over 15 years. It always seemed to help, maybe it was just psychological. Either way, I always felt better after my visits.

I am a skeptic, too.

I'm skeptical. Never been to one.

My wife goes sometimes. My parents and brothers go too.

My back, sometimes does get sore and hurt, but after a couple of days, it always seems to straighten out.

My wife thinks I'm crazy.

I say change your route and avoid that mile. Wink

Seriously, even if it is only a psychological benefit you get from it, $80 for the whole family is cheap, cheap, cheap.

i went to one this past winter. he suggested my orthotics which i've really learned to love...however, i was really skeptical when he was pulling out those wires and attaching them to my back and trying to get this color coded picture of my right and left side---

the spinal manipulations were ok, but i also was very skeptical when he'd mess with my neck and crack it and twist it.....i had visions of my not being able to get up and walk out EVAH again..

he also would launch into these speeches about his chiropractic lifestyle and would want me to attend these seminars in the evenings and i was like, "gottttta go. like, my fish bowl needs cleaning and i have to count the cracks on my ceiling too................"

i guess there's good and bad....i kinda like his pay structure though Keltic. can't get more fair than pay what you can....

I've been, my insurance covered it, nothing sketchy happened, no weird discussion of anything, they figured out I was having trouble with my IT bands, straightened that out, figured out a few other things about my running form and I've been injury free ever since. I have nothing but thumbs up about my particular chiro, I've recommended several people. However, if anything like what a lot of you are saying had happened? I would have been out the door fast....

to evreything Fla said! I used to work for a chiropractor and did a lot of research on it before I took the job, because I didn't want to work for a schlock. He wasn't, and he's fixed up half my family, a bunch of my friends, and he's also the ONLY one that has figured out what was wrong with my hip despite the fact that MEDICAL doctors couldn't find any conclusive test results.

OL, I SAW my xrays, you can't fake a misalignment nor can you fake one hip sitting up higher than the other one, and having studied physiology, I know that it is true that if a nerve is occluded in any way, whether it's fully pinched off or just being irritated by a vertebra being out of alignment and pressing on it, the flow of nerve transmission WILL be interrupted and that can cause issues in whatever part of your body is connected to that nerve/set of nerves.

Case in point: I came home with a wicked-a$$ sinus infection from Madison (that was in MAY), did two courses of the strongest antibiotics on the market after my doctor insisted that was the answer--nada. TEN weeks later, I start getting adjusted, including my neck, where my C2 vertebra was out of alignment, and POOF! It's gone. Cleared up completely when I'd been off the drugs for over a month and it was still as bad as it had been before I went.

I'd say, to anyone who's thinking about it but chicken, just check the ones in your area out and make sure you get references from others who have been treated. Some of them are schmucks, some of them are not. Beware the ones who are more interested in selling you stuff, expensive vitamins and whatnot, than in giving you treatment and look for ones that do more than just crack and crunch. I get muscle stim therapy, infrared heat therapy, and I start rehab work in two weeks. To me, it's worth every penny. You wouldn't believe how much better my hip is in three weeks of treatment.
