I cannot believe this was done. A lady interviewed today said she was glad that the house passed because homosexual marriage is illegal in our state. Now why didn't I think of that reason to ban ALL books?

http://www.kotv.com/main/home/stories.asp?whichpage=1&id=83107

Excerpt from article:

"The Oklahoma House has passed a resolution urging state libraries to removed a controversial children's book from their shelves. The fight over the book "King and King" is because it has a homosexual theme and deals with two princes marrying each other."

Oh for CRYING OUT LOUD!!
Evil or Very Mad

What about the kids who get NO INFORMATION other than what they get at the library? The deserve a balanced choice.

Doesn't that TV station have spell-check on their computers? I found 4 errors.

Perhaps the Oklahoma House should pass a resolution urging schools to purchase new spelling textbooks.

I should also clarify this a thread about the banning of books because the subject matter of the book is illegal. This is not a thread about homosexual marriage or homosexuality in general.

I'm ok with it being moved to On Topic.

and to keltic.

I don't know what to say.

Are they going to ban books on speeding? Smoking in public places? Or dare I say, the inclusion of religon in the state?????

I wonder if there is anything "illegal" in the Bible?

Before you know it, they'll quit giving out that free six pack, for every sixth book borrowed. Surprised

hope they got "those" books out of there in time, you all know if you read, or even walk by such a book discussing the evil, sin-ridden, negatively impacting all homosexuals you, your children, or your neighbor will become one of them!!!

It would be awful to keep these books there so that their could be conversations/discussions/differing points of view that the world is made up of a multiple of different folks all of whom have families, are loved, and make the world what it is.

Maybe I'm in the minority here but the subject of homosexuality doesn't need to be in books geared towards 5 to 7 yr old kids.

no, I just find it strange to be in that area also. I could see my boys at that age coming up and saying "mom, there's a mistake in this book". I think the argument is just to raise the book up on the shelves isn't it? I know when my boys where in K-1 grade, their section is at sitting level and I'd sit on a chair and read whilst they tool around and look at picture books.

I can understand some of the reasoning of introducing the subject of everyone is different at this age, but I don't want to get in the discussion of sexual preference at this stage of my child's life. 7+ would be more appropriate. My son is in third grade and IMHO is the age for this subject matter, mainly because this is the age that his school discusses "the body" talks. I'd rather have my kids tackle the "diversity" issues of race, etc at the under 7 age and then move on with concepts that include sex. His classmate has two moms and at 8 he seemed to grasp the concept without negatitivity.....I'm not convinced this would have happened a year ago.

I think that there are a lot of kids who are dealing with those issues in their own families. That's one reason why the books are being written.

We own a copy in our library, but we have it in our parent's collection, so that it's available for parents who want to discuss this with their children. We didn't buy the sequel, mainly because the reviews weren't as good as for the first one.

That makes sense to me.
