Posted: 10/14/04 - 16:29 Post subject: Chicago Marathon (some people asked for this)
chip 5:03:10
clock 5:22:18
My training for this was less than stellar. I'm positive there are people here with much better time management skills than me, but it was very difficult time wise for Mr Poky and I both to train for Chicago. Since this was his first marathon he had first priority whenever there was a scheduling conflict.
We arrived at the start around 6:30. After using the porta potties a thousand times we wished each other luck and lined up at our respective times...me around 12:00 and Mr Poky around 10:00. My plan was to start out very slow and just see what happens. I once again enjoyed the crowds and the scenery. There were a lot of funny signs, and of course this year many of them were political in nature, however, it's probably best not to go into detail here. My favorite sign was held by a couple of no neck guys basically telling Diane to hurry up because they were missing football.
I really wanted to finish in under 5 hours. For the first 23 miles everything went as planned. I caught up to the 5 hour pace group around mile 14 still feeling strong. Except for mile 18 where I took gu and water, I stayed ahead of the 5 hour pace team. Everything was going good until the mile 23 wall. It was funny when I got to mile twenty I was so
worried about hitting the wall I actually ran one of my faster miles. However, the wall was still there they just moved it this year to mile 23...who knew? . I'll spare everyone the drama, but let's just say the last mile was my slowest .
I wish I could say I was a better person, but there was this beyotch named Linda who was 30 lbs heavier with a first marathon sign on her back which I had to read the last two miles. I wanted to trip her, but I couldn't catch her.
Mr Poky's goal was to finish around 4:30. I looked for him in the finisher's area, but did not find him. My next goal was dictated by my stomach screaming porta potty!!! porta potty!!!
After putting the space blanket to good use I met up with Mr Poky and family. Mr Poky was very disappointed as he finished in over 5 hours because of bad stitch around mile 18. I felt bad for him, but not so bad that I did not gloat a little when I found out I beat him. only by 1:30
After a massive pigout with the family, Mr Poky and I met up with Gretreiver, Jacked Up, Library Chick, and Genie. It was nice to meet Gretreiver and Jacked Up again, and Genie and Library Chickl for the first time.
I also did a second marathon on Monday. The marathon shopping trip up and down Michigan Avenue with my MIL. The woman can shop.

A little more expansive than your first effort, I must say.
Good job. You'll kick ass with us next year.

Poky,
It was very nice to see you and Mr. Poky again. Don't let Akey deceive you, folks, Poky is a really nice person! And those Southern accents don't hurt, either.
I told you not to look for me at the 23rd mile. But really, you did do very well, you really did! You're getting there (breaking the 5-hour mark) - don't get discouraged. And for a first time, Mr. Poky did quite well too. If you haven't told him about it, let him read my report - anything can happen to anyone in a race.
I'm happy you had a nice time here.

It was great to meet you and Mr. Poky! We figured it would be the second marathon that did you in.... Glad you had fun, and seriously, you did pretty darn good for your training being less than stellar! AND you beat Mr. Poky

Poky,
I think you and the Mr. did a great job! I only hope to do near that well on my first (Oct 31). I can also see my husband holding up the "Tracy, hurry up, I'm missing the football game" sign! Of course, it is worse for me since the game that day is Packers (my team) vs. Redskins right here in ol' DC.
Great job, though! You should be proud of yourself!! We sure are!

She can't be that nice if she's hanging out with the likes of me.
I think you did awesome Poky, but Linda told me you didn't smile enough.

Less-than-stellar training notwithstanding, sounds like a great job to me.
Congrats.
