When I was hiking last summer I met some huge lady on the trail who was hiking to lose weight. She planned on going half of the AT, right around 1000 miles. But I saw her at roughly 50 miles into it and it took her almost a dozen days to do that. Granted the terrain was pretty tough, and she was huge, but she was inching along. I wonder if she ever made it...

I love seeing over weight people trying to do something to better their health. I actually have friends that make comments about over weight people at the gym. I just look at them and say 'at least they are trying to do something for themselves'. Funny it's usually the friends of mine that RARELY go to the gym in the first place if at all...

I have a hard time thinking of him as a "hero" because he left his wife and kids behind for a year.

I don't think I would call him a 'hero'. But i do think that he is grave for doing it. Good on him for wanting to do something about it. Leaving your family for a year, a little harsh but he's also showing his kids that exercise is the best way to lose weight

But it is better than staying unhealthy and leaving them forever because of obesity related death.

He could have just joined a gym or just eaten at Subway a lot.

i like him because he has the courage to admit things that many overweight people will just NOT come to terms with, let alone tell the whole world so that they might be accountable:
I am not happy because I am fat and being fat makes every day unhappy.
So being overweight darkens every good thing that you achieve in your life and even prevents some things from happening at all.
I have the same excuses, desires and dreams as many others in my position. I know though, that there is no other option but physical exertion to truly get back into shape.
I have an addiction and there needs to be dedication and sacrifice to cure addictions.
I know that to permanently lose this weight I must learn to be more responsible to myself.
he's done with making excuses and said he's got his family's blessing.
i hope he succeeds, i see it being a real personal disaster if he doesn't.

I'm sorry but I'm cynical. Come on! If he is that dedicated to lose the weight he could do it staying home with his family and keeping his job.
$29 for a t-shirt! I really need to come up with a scam to keep me out of a cubicle for 40 hours a week.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe at home there are too many bad memories (I think he said what spiraled him out of control was a car accident where he killed two pedestrians). Maybe his wife was unwittingly sabotoging his attempts to diet.
Maybe he needed to get away and clear his head.
/although 29 bux for a tee is a bit steep.
At least he left to improve himself and change.
