drove over an hour in the dark to get to this race site in pittsburgh by the 8AM start time. i have run this half course before, same course, different sponsor this time.
first mile is moderate uphill climb; i'd forgotten about that start. i knew the first mile marker was shortly after the decent and when i descend, there's no mile marker..... and i ask a volunteer about it and he tells me there are no mile markers anywhere on this course. so much for my well-thought out plan to run 8:45s NO MILE SPLITS!!!! i feel sunk.
so i run clueless for about 5.7 miles when i find a woman with a garmin and get the mileage and the pace -- low 8s. again, i feel sunk. i decide to run slightly behind her for however long i can hang. i hang until i ask her again where we are -- 11.2! good thing, my ITB is tight and the right knee is about to blow. it starts raining now and i basically just put my head down and run till i see the clock: 1:52:14.
oh, here's my watch splits:
1:52:19. 4th place in my age group of 5 women.
i really just wanted to beat my half pr of 2:00:01. this course was really difficult for me, it ran inside a park with alot of traffic to my left the entire time, and those speed HUMPS are annoying.
there were also alot of saturday joggers "joining" in the race crowd. they were considerably slower and alot "fresher" than the half runners. at one point, this bouncy man joins me and asks if he can run along side for a while. i look at his shoe -- no chip -- i want to tell him if he isn't as miserable as me at this moment, he should buzz off. but i didn't.
i am just happy i met my goal and the real downpour started 3 minutes after i crossed the line.

Wow! Way to smash that 2 hour goal!!!!! That's really great, considering you couldn't get mile markers. So was it raining the whole race this morning?
What side of Pittsburgh is this on? I think I read about this, but didn't realize it was in Pittsburgh.
Excellent race!!!!!!

Awesome time - completely smashed the 2hr barrier! You're making me seriously think about incorporating more treadmill workouts into my training.
Congrats on a well deserved PR!

A BIG, BIG CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 8 MIN. PERSONAL BEST!!!!
Oh Boy, have I been waiting for a race report like this. I only hope that some of the regulars here read your report, and then read it again.
Now tell me Rocky.
Do you think you would have smashed your 2 hour best time if the race organisers had their mile/km. markers set up?
My guess is NO WAY
Sure you probably would have knocked a minute off maybe even two or three, but not EIGHT!!!
Believe me the lack of markers was a blessing in your case.
WHY?
Your 8:45s went out the door and because there were no markers you had to run with your head.
Your optimum racing pace!!!
We train longer slower distance, some do speed work (intervals, repetitions etc.) some do fartlek and some pace variation, but it all becomes a bit confusing come race day and people run either too fast or too slow
How many practice some running at race pace?
Pace yourself by all means and I'm talking about a pace that has been practiced with a degree of honest effort. Don't get locked into this pace calculator/garmin thing, your only limiting yourself.
"My right knee is about to blow" ( But it didn't did it?)
"my ITB is tight" and I'll give you odds if you ran at your slower projected pace you would still be posting that your knee was about to blow and your ITB was tight.
So the next time you strike those girls who finished up ahead of you, get right up on their shoulders and listen to that pace calculator in your head, it may be too quick for you but at least they will know you're there.
And you may have to fall off the pace a little but run to how YOU feel and ignore the watch.
Who knows, you may blow up. So what you have made big inroads this year. You have every chance of taking even more time off your PB. and you may even clean 'em' all up.
WELL DONE ONCE AGAIN ROCKY. MAGNIFICENT EFFORT.
