Cliff's Notes at bottom.
Didn't even know if I was going to do this race. It all depended on my wife's health. She's been well enough (relatively) that I could get away for a few hours, so I took advantage of the break and got up this morning to do the race.
It was located here :: http://www.chateauelanatlanta.com/ That's about 40 minutes from my house, so the drive wasn't bad. Got there scoped out the bathrooms quick. I suffer from tiny-bladder-on-race-day syndrome.
Got registered and found a spot in the transition area to set up to ward the back. Putzed around for a while and hit the bathroom again. By that time, it was time to start the race.
RD gave out some general instructions on the race course and told us to be on the lookout for race marshals handing out penalties for improper bike stuff.
All of a sudden BANG and we took off. I figured this was either one fast pack or a whole lotta jack rabbits. There were a bunch of people ahead of me. First mile was easy rolling hills while the pack thinned out. I'm sure the first mile was short because I hit it at 6:15 and I was holding back a lot. A bunch of others I was running with couldn't believe how fast the first mile ticked off. I ended the first 2.4 mile run in 16:45 (7:00 pace) right on target.
Through the transition area and onto the bike. Spent the first mile trying to get my right foot clipped in. Got passed a couple of times and passed a few people. This one guy and I played leapfrog at least 10 times. I'd pass him, he'd pass me. Finally I asked him if we were going to do this the whole race and he said and proceeded to drop me and I never saw him again.
Finished the bike in roughly 38 minutes for a pace of +20MPH. Again, right on target.
Through the transition again and on to the 2nd run. They told the lady right beside me that she was the 8th place female. She pulled ahead by about 25 yds. until the first mile where I passed her. She told me to go ahead because she wouldn't be able to maintain the pace. I managed to pick off a few more people and kept from getting passed myself. I could see the finish ling coming up about 1/2 mi. away and there was only 1 guy that I could possibly catch so I set my sights on him and managed to catch up with him about 50 yds. from the finish. It was the guy I'd been leap frogging on the bike, I'd finally caught up with him! He recognized me too and we egged each other on up the final hill pushing each other faster and faster. I managed to squeeze in about 1 sec. ahead of him but almost lost my lunch in the process.
Last 2.4 miles was @ 18:00 (7:30 pace).
Overtime was 1:15:00 - I didn't keep track of transition times.
I'd give myself an A for effort. I think if I would have known that I was going to do this race and focused on it, I could have done a little better, but not much. It was danged nice to get out of the house and blow of some energy before this upcoming week.
Cliff's Notes ::
2.4 mi. run @ 16:45
13 mi. bike @ 38:00
2.4 mi. run @ 18:00
Finish time of 1:15:00
4th in my age group. Missed a 3rd place award by 2:15. Hard to say where I finished overall. They had me listed as 36 out of 115 males but that didn't include teams or Clydesdales. I think I was probably 40th out of 200 people total.

dang, PH, that was an excellent report. it really moved. Awesome job and congrats. The 2:15 you missed 3rd place by you'll achieve in another race.
Well done!
