I unlocked the thread since some people feel like they want to say something. Keep it polite and civil. I have 0 tolerance for nonsense.

Remember that little amendment 1 thingy

You mean the one that says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."?

Is rtpd113 a congressman?

Do you really think that he thought the First Amendment had a literal application here? Or could he possibly have been speaking figuratively? You can decide.

Well, perhaps we should discuss what a moderator's options are when one posts something blatantly discriminatory, as was done in Sonny's thread.

This isn't a 1st Amendment issue b/c it's a private forum. That said, there are things that I don't think we should have to read without there being consequences. If someone makes a negative generalization about a particular group, even if that group isn't my group, I think it's wrong. But I'd rather hold that person's feet to the fire and make him accountable for his words than have the thread locked.

However, since threads get locked for reasons that seem pretty minor to me, I don't think the racist drivel should stand either. It doesn't seem like the lock standard gets applied consistently.

So I guess the issues comes down to: will we lock a thread when things get at all touchy and thus have a pointless board, or will we moderate responses and PM a writer who has stepped over the line, asking them to rethink their approach before a thread gets locked? I' feel the second approach is longer and more difficult, but I think it's the more worthwhile.

The rules are pretty simple, stay on topic and no sarcasm.

Obey those rules and threads won't get locked.

Seems pretty simple to me.

For the most part that is true. However, sometimes you need to interpret the intent of the rules and make a judgement call so that the purpose of the discussion is realized. At least, that's what I think a successful moderator would do. People will stop posting if the rules are being upheld but the intentions behind the rules are being neglected.

I guess what is really need are some true guidelines, and codes of conduct.

Points can be made without sarcasm, or speaking down to the others. We all have our own opinions, and while we don't have to agree with the dissenter, we should have respect for one other.

I believe the moderator was fully within their rights to lock the topic.

Being a mod isn't easy. Most people don't realize that until they've actually had to do it. :/
