PostPosted: 08/17/03 - 19:12    Post subject: Carrabba's Summer Beach Run (5 Miler) Report
Summary:
I felt like I was running a solid race and it was really disheartening to see this other guy that I normally crush, just come up and catch me at mile 4 and I couldn't hang with him. I guess I really need to get down to 180 (presently hanging around 190!!!) or lower if I want to do better in some of these longer races. Or I have to start training harder.

Mile 1: Felt good as I made a concientious (sp??) effort to hold myself back. Tried to ignore the head wind we were running into as we headed out south on Jacksonville Beach.

Mile 2: Still feeling good, I knew my pace had dropped off like it always does but I still felt okay. Headwind is still a B!tch but it is keeping me cool.

Mile 2.5: I have hit the halfway point in just about 20 even and as soon as I turn around the wind is gone. God it feels hot now!!!

Mile 3: As I hit my split I realize that I am hanging on to the pace I want (8 min/miles)

Mile 4: Starting to struggle to hang on to my pace. Then out of nowhere a guy that I normally beat from work shows up. Now I feel an emotion and I am not sure if it is shame or embarassed or what????

Mile 5: I spent the whole time trying to hang with the guy from work. I close to within about 10 - 20 yards but I have nothing left to pass him. I even tried catching some of the wimmin that had caught me around 3.5 that he was running with and I failed in that.

Summary Pt2: Finally I am done. I have broken 40 minutes for the Summer beaches run but I am still disappointed. Has anyone else ever felt this way. I really felt like I was running a good strong race but to see that guy come out of nowhere and just motor by me pi$$ed me off. The problem is I did not have the intestinal fortitude to hang with him and outkick him at the end. That is going to really gnaw at me until I we have another longer race that we both do. By the way, he is a nice guy and all but I hate to lose to people that i think I should beat.

frustrating to you for sure, especially being unable to pass "that guy" but to me, you ran a he!! of a 5 miler in the florida sunshine. use it as motivation to move ahead next time.

this has happened to me except she was right behind me the whole time and i never knew it-- and then trompled me in the last 20 yds. i was furious cuz i always beat "her" i feel your frustration and i swear, that will NEVER happen to me again. Wink

i think it's an awesome time for 5 miles cheers

I can understand your frustrations, but I think you raced pretty well for racing in the heat.

Thanks Everyone,
I felt like I ran the smartest race I have run since the Gate River Run in March. Now I just need to figure out a way to run a little harder in each race.
Time to crank up the Training for the Jax Marathon!

Looks to me like you ran a pretty fine race. It is a bummer to lose to the guy from work though. I've run against a friend from work here four times this year and he's won two and I've won two. He beat me in the 4 miler where my shoe came untied by about 8 seconds and he beat me in a 5 miler by 10 or 12 seconds because he was just in better shape for that race. I beat him in the two 5k's we've run. Just keep plugging away and get him next time!

well, you have the competitive drive, so next time I'm sure you'll kick butt. I still think you did great! Hey, was this run in the sand??? How are your ankles? Great job!

Smile,

Shelly
