Well I am starting to recover from last nights race.
I was not happy with my results at all!
The temperature was Hot and HUMID! We had a breeze at our back for the first half of the race and then we had to run into it for the second half.
I went out kind of slow but that was my plan. I have a bad habit of starting out to fast and then fading as the race goes on.
Well anyway
I get to the water stop at the first mile and I am there at about 8:20 (I forgot to hit the split button on my watch and I have forgotten what I saw when I ran by the clock) which is 20 seconds slower than I wanted but better than being 20 seconds faster. The bad thing is that my legs are already tired! All I can do is continue on and see if my legs wake up.
Mile 2: I remember to hit my split and I see it says 16:38 so I am maintining my approximate 8:20 pace but my legs aren't feeling any better
I hit the turn around at 20:50 and I realize that the return trip is going to suck big time!
Mile 3 comes and I am at 25:00 Uh Oh here I go fading fast again. As I struggle on to mile 4 I actually begin to ponder walking but I fight though that picking sand piles to run to before I am allowed to walk.
Mile 4 comes and I am now at 34:08 and I have given up all hopes of breaking 40 and now I am hoping to beat last years time.
I see the sign that says half a mile to go, look up and think "GOD, is this race ever going to end.
Finally the finish line and I come it 43:35 (unnofficial). That is almost a minute and half slower than last year! I stagger through the chute, drink some water and head off to find the Mrs Boiler and my little boilermakers. Chris looks at me like I am about to die. After drinking more water we pack up all the stuff, drop some of it in the car and then get in line for dinner and beer. After 1 plate of food, 2 and half beers we head home!
Chris had planned on a nap naughty for me when we got home but she wasn't feeling well so after watching a little of the FSU/ISU game we headed to bed.

I think I even lost to a guy that I Run with all the time that I usually crush. I guess all I can do is toss it up to experience and realize that I guess my overtraining in the month of July has really caught up with me. Very low mileage, 20 miles maybe 22 planned for me this week and probably next.

Have a great week Everyone.

considering you were running 5 miles in the Florida sun and sand in August -- i'd say your time was great. sorry you're disappointed - cut back this week. do the recovery thang and pray for cooler temps.

good job (we need a smilie with sweat beads flying off his head).

Nice job Eric. I don't know how you run all the time in the heat down there, the week I spent there was brutal.

Great jobby Eric. Hey! You finished! You ran on sand, it was hot. I think that would kick all of our butts! I'd probably just give up after mile 3 and go surfing or something....

congrats! Sorry about the nap thing though...

Was it a race on the beach sand? Uuugh. I tried to find the Hot & Humid handicapping calculator, but no luck Wink After the couple weeks of lower mileage you have planned, I'd look for another 8km and plunk down that sub-40. Sounds like it's right around the corner.

It was on the beach, the hard pack area between high and low tides but yes when you turned the corner at the halfway point and the headwind turned into a tailwind it felt like the temperature jumped about 5 to 10 degrees!

I felt pretty good in my recovery run today and I plan to stick to a week of recovery runs to make sure. Nice easy 4 milers! and maybe a nap on the weekend!
