I am looking to have my carpets cleaned before we have all the family over for Thanksgiving. I was just curious what the best bang for the buck was. Any recommendations?

Just rent a unit, right now. They work really good (when you follow directions ). The professional cleaners are more for when your moving out of your house/apt and such.

I have done it myself, and paid to have it done. I like to have someone else do my dirty work.

I love my Hoover MaxExtract SteamVac. Love love love it. Being able to get that mess right when it's fresh is ultimate.
Plus, you spend the $200-$400 (depends on what model strikes you) once and the thing's yours...
and think about it... your vacuum (is supposed to) lasts for years, and you use it quite often... you will only use your SteamVac several times a year at most... so this is a wise investment, as it's probably the only one you'll ever need to buy, especially if you clean it well and store it where it won't get beat up by kids wanting to use it as Silver.

How often do you clean the carpet? Seriously.
We have a cleaner of our own, but only because we had heavy duty wear and tear on the carpeting (the downstairs has since had the carpet taken out and replaced with wood). If you don't clean that often, a rental or a service would be the way to go. Which one you go with prob depends on how nice the carpet is.

I'm with LE on this one. I love my Bissell - picked it up on sale at Best Buy for less than $300. With two dogs (one who's not 100% housebroken, and never will be ) it's a must. You use it twice you've broken even. I use mine every few months in the TV room (the only room with carpeting); even though it's just the one room, I feel it was a deal and a half. Plus it's easier to clean the carpet before you go away for a weekend whenever you get a chance than to wait for someone to show up.

I voted to rent a unit, but if you're gonna use it several times a year (and depending on the rental price), it may be worth an investment.

I have nothing to offer except that knowing my family, I would schedule the cleaning for after they left....

I clean my carpets every month just about (3 kids, white carpet). Have a Hoover SteamVac. Love that thing. I also have a small hand-held unit for cleaning up little messes. These two things are the best investments I've ever made.

Rent your own. You can do just a good a job yourself as if you paid someone else. I paid someone else once and I wasn;t really impressed so off to the Grocery Store to rent one from now on for me.

Bought a Hoover steam vac a few years ago when the boys were under 4. We still use it 4 or 5 times a year, and it was a good investment.
