About every 2 years, we get it done professionaly. Once a year, usually in the spring, I borrow my dad's, I just buy the shampoo for him

I have mine done professionally every 3 or 4 months, and then use my home unit for maintenance purposes in between. I should add the disclaimer that I have 3 cats, 3 dogs, and a husband living in the house... I also have one of the hand held machines for small accidents, it's great!
I just think that no matter how good a job my bissel does, the pro's make it look even better! (but then again, look at all the critters in my house)
