Hi, I'm Joel and this is a long post. Grab a Coors partyball, sit back on the Lazy-boy and dig in!
Career Issues seem to be all the rage around here. Never to miss the bandwagon, the shelfmeister (i promise to never call myself that again) has hopped on!
the 411:
My buddy Darin calls me up from Madison telling me an excellent opportunity has just opened up where he works (Eli Lilly)...that's right a Pharmaceutical company...It's a Long-term Care Specialist position (sales related).
This company is responsible for Prozac, Zyprexa and a bunch of other drugs on the market today. Did you know it takes 100 million to a billion dollars to create these drugs? Oh! And that it takes 10-15 years from the beginning of the process for them to ever hit the 'shelves'...and that's IF they get approved. (can you tell I've been internetting all day on this?).
So here's my dilemna...I want the job. Am I just a wee tad intimated by all the knowledge I'll need to attain? Yes. I'm confident I can do it...but it's ALOT (and for those of you related in the profession, I'm sure you'd throw out an "amen" for me).
Getting hired would be the toughest part. Luckily, I have an 'in' with my friend Darin so that'll give me the ability to skip the 100 folks trying to apply for it online and straight to the interview portion. A 4 step process and from what I've heard, I need to bring my 'A Game' and then some.
So let's say I get it. I'd double my salary...get a company car..blah blah blah...this works out perfectly as I do NOT want Joy working when we do decide to have a kid. Plus we both LOVE Madison. Have some friends and would only be about an 1.5 hours away from the P's. I'm fascinated with this beast they call Pharmaceutical Sales...I truly think it's something I would fully embrace and be good at.
The only con really is that we'd have to move to Madison and leave her new lovely friend (mi casa). We've both talked about this and know that in the longrun, this new position is something we can't pass up. So I'm going to go for it! or
ANY kind of advice or thoughts would be 'dope', 'straight butta' or 'nifty'.

you've got to give this opportunity every ounce of consideration it deserves. what's the future look like in your present position? Can you see yourself there in another 5-10 years? or have you taken this as far as it will go? the pharmaceuticals job sounds great. i see these folks a lot since I hang out at my PCP once a week for those darn allergy shots. You'll get some nice percs with this one. I'd say you need to go for it.

Sounds like a great opportunity, at the very least follow the interview
process to the end.

I just dry heaved when I thought of that, keltic... . It's not a bad job in any regard. I make good money, work enough to do it and as you can well see from my post count, I have ALOT of time to do nuttin.
Thanks for the feedback thus far, folks. I find myself getting more excited about as each minute ticks by. In my opinion, it's always good to get interviewing experience anyway so what ever happens, I'm sure I'll learn something valuable...
(and no one better be kissing up to me for free drugs right now! )

[homer]mmmm-mmm, company car, mmmm[/homer]
Seriously though, take a trip through the interviews, research the company, get a feel for what the job involves, the industry and whether it fits with you. Money can't buy ya love, right? Make sure you'll like being there.

written on the side in big purple letters?
Or maybe
[scroll:ffaad3bafd]Ask me about my mental illness[/scroll:ffaad3bafd]
In which event you could refer them here.....

Shelfie,
Sales is sales, and if you're good at selling now, you'll be good at that too. Amen to the intimidation factor and the knowledge you'll have to acquire, but you can do it. Hey, if a tutu and tiara wearing lab rat and an old fogey like me can do it, you can!
You've gotten good advice so far; at the very least, go through the interview process and learn everything you can about the company and life in Madison.
I just saw a quote somewhere; something about there is no such thing as a missed opportunity because if one person passes up an opportunity there's another person there to take it. Be the one who takes it.

sounds good to me
for the interview - get the dope (pun intented) on the product you'll be selling, the market you'll be selling it in and its competitors.
will they be paying to relocate you??
Oh and regardless on how this plays itself out - keep the resolve you have right now in leaving your current job.....and use it to find a new job
Best of Luck Joel!!

YO! you must GO for it
it's your age Joel - your duty is to job hop at this point in your young life.
seriously, do not miss the opportunity. my college roomie weathered a nasty divorce and was forced back out there -- she was hired by Lili as a rep. there was extensive training and more training and more on top. and free prozac for me.... not really.
can't hurt to explore it - in fact you have to if you are already looking ahead at "kidlet" plan.
funny, or sad, thing about pharmacy companies is that they'll prolly never go out of business. think i have 9 bottles of Lili insulin in my fridge right now. and tell me this antidepressant rage is going to fall off any time soon -- i tell ya, it's recession proof. not like Lili is some fly by night operation anyway. i'm sure the benefits and stock options (carrot carrot) would be attractive. but, like jrjo said--make sure it fits "you"
BTW - jerky yogurt would make a fab fallback.
now, get out there. youngun.

nothing new here other then to say you should always be willing to take career risks...it's something that's almost a must do if you want to find the 'perfect job'...the catch is to not become to stretched financially that you can't take a step back if you get into something that sucks rocks...
(my BIL works in mktg for Lilly in Indy, he likes the company a lot...)

I would take a look at what they have "in the pipeline." That is, what do they have in Stage III trials and what is the market for new drugs expected to roll out in the next couple of years? And what drugs are big sellers that have patent expiration in the next few years. If they lose a bunch of drugs and don't have much coming in the way of sales replacements--then they don't need a big sales force on down the line.
