My "Maint Req" light has now come on in my SUV. Do you think I will be immediately running down to the local car dealer/fix-up place and having that taken care of??? HECK NO!!!
So, are you the type that waits until the last possible minute or do you take care of that oil change every 2,999 miles???

Most auto manufacturers will tell you to change the oil every 5,000 miles now. Check your owner's manual. It's mostly the oil change places the recommend every 3,000 miles, for obvious reasons.

I try to keep as regular as possible. Sometimes I am a little over but usually right on top of it.

I get my oil done about every 5000 miles.
The only time I take either car to the shop is for state inspections, or maintenance as needed

We overmaintain. We change oil at every 2500 miles.

I change every 3-4000 miles. And since I generally run vehicles to a minimum of 140k miles with little maintenance problems I think it works.

Hubby stays right on top of this too. Every 3-4000.

Seriously? Huh.
I'm sure my maintenance plan requires me to get it done every 3000 miles so i can stay covered by it or some foolery like that

I would just head over to the nearest Autozone and have them read what the code is. They do it for free and it takes just a few minutes. It could be simply you didn't screw the gas cap on tight enough.
My service engine light came on and I pulled a trailer for 200 miles before having it checked.
I'm typically the type that is on top of maintainence. I like for my vehicle to perform well and get the best mileage it can get. Oil filter is typically changed every 4000-5000 miles. Fuel filter every few months. Same with the air filter.

Yeah, Dad says 3k is not absolutely necessary, but will change mine whenever I want him to. I do keep track, and try to do it/have it done between 3-4k.
I can change my own oil, and have done so in the past, but Dad is quicker at it than I am, plus he loves to do it.
