I read in this fourm the many comments about working for a big corporation and how have's like to have more at the expense of the have nots.

So I guess I have two questions for you all to ponder.

1. Have working for the company you currently work for been an overall good experience (by experience I mean despite its flaws its a good place to work for).

2. Have the actions for the company to make profit at all cost, while trimming the employee roster soured your desire?

I'm hoping to have a good, frank discussion on your experiences and how it shape your day to day working.

Yes. Despite its many flaws the man who started my firm was very generous and many of his original tenets still stand. The direction I see it heading in however I do not like.

Yes and no. Again, its more what I see coming than what has happened, because despite some big downturns, a lot of us still have jobs and mostly the same benefits, so I really can't complain currently. But we have sort of been warned about what the future holds. I, fortunately, won't be here long into the future. I'll be deep into the world of corporate healthcare....soooo different I'm sure. That was sarcasm, I'm sure all corporations are alike no matter the industry.

2. Have the actions for the company to make profit at all cost, while trimming the employee roster soured your desire? No, in trimming their ranks they have also trimmed the fat.

I didn't love corporate life, so I work in the non-profit world. Much better fit for me.

I don't judge anyone for the career choices they make, but I personally felt that working in a corporation sucked the soul out of me and I didn't have any respect for the higher-up people who had supposedly "made it," because in order to make it they completely abandoned their families and now that they had made it they treated other people with an unspeakable arrogance.

As some of you know, I made a significant life change when I decided to leave corporate America and go into non-profit. I felt the same way Go described above.

Yes it's been a good place to work as evidenced by my 25 yrs of employment with no desire to look elsewhere. As there are a lot of other long-timers employed here I think most employees would agree.

Trimming the roster has been a cyclic thing around here as our workload has varied. I expect another layoff in a year or two and hope I survive that one too. It hasn't soured my desire.

I don't believe the majority of "higher ups" around this place treat others with arrogance. There is some of that but it's not tolerated very well. We have some managerial types who made it on their ability to brown-nose but most of them earned their position.

I don't have any complaints that amount to much about my employer, they've treated me with a pretty reasonable amount of respect.

I work for a non-profit according to its tax status. However, there is a corporate mentality in recent years. It is not unwarranted for business but the harshness can be disconcerting in comparision to the "old way". There is a forgiving nature towards importance of family here. I forget what it's like in corporate America.

It has been overall good allowing me to expand my skills. In addition I work with people that are bright and giving. At least most of them.

Yes. There were a series of very small lay-offs that were handled very poorly. One very loyal gentleman with 20-odd years with the company was escorted out of his office. This man was NOT management and did not handle sensitive materials. He was treated horribly. I've personalized the shame I feel about how the company treated him on that last day. I'm ashamed because he deserved so much better.

I've spent most of my working career in government service either as a "managerial type" or paid drone.

To me, the corporate world puts way way too much emphasys on the profit statement. The market takes a downturn; lay offs, market comes back; re hires. Promotions are not based on ability but on having an MBA (I have an Master's in Public Admin) reguardless of managerial talent.

Government is not exempt in this - but the "screening" process that there is tends to weed them out before any innocent animals are harmed. Emphasys is placed on training managers to be more effective in dealing with people, and managing unusual situations.

I used to work with a very good manager. EXCEPT, when something went wrong that we had no control over she tended to get very excited. I had to keep assuring her all that could be done was being done and I would inform her the second things got corrected. It did not do much to calm her down but at least I tried to.

As an aside, any large organization will "suck the life out of you" no matter who you work for. People have their own little control areas and any incursions will be met with bared fangs. There is always a search for power and way too much emphasys on sucking up to the bosses.

I guess I'll use my old corporate job for this one. Yes, and no. I liked working for certain areas of the company, but towards the end the politics/butt-kissing/back-stabbing did me in.

2. Have the actions for the company to make profit at all cost, while trimming the employee roster soured your desire?
Yes. Very much so. In particular one event sticks in my head. It had to do with credit scoring being used to rate premiums on policies. The company expected all employees to purchase their insurance, yet their own HMOP (which was what was offered as employee healthcare) was so slow in paying the doctors that in more than one case, unless the employee paid the doctor and was reimbursed, the bill would go to collections. Therefore, the employee's credit report would be damaged, thus rasing their premiums, making the company more money due to it's own ineptitude in processing claims. Nice. That issue was ignored in a division meeting, even though it was raised repeatedly. I could go on as there were a lot more injustices, including "right-sizing" people on the verge of retirement while the CEO's bonuses kept getting higher and higher. Don't get me going on "executive" bonuses/salaries. No one needs that much money, especially when it arrrives via screwing others out of their retirement. I am sure the 7th circle of hell will be full. But I'm not bitter. Wink

I'm hoping to have a good, frank discussion on your experiences and how it shape your day to day working.
