Posted: 02/19/04 - 07:59 Post subject: Can Edwards catch Kerry?
Just wondering the general thoughts on this.
With Edwards strong showing in Wisconsin, can he surge and make this a close race, or will Kerry continue to dominate?
I'm thinking that probably the last thing that Kerry and Bush for that matter, wanted was Edwards gaining momentum.
I've said this before, I'm pretty much a moderate who leans Republican, but John Edwards is an excellent candidate. He's a great speaker and very personable.
Now that it's just a two person race...will more people pay attention to him.

In this posters opinion, the ticket will be Kerry/Edwards. Kerry needs Edwards for the South. I do believe Kerry will as HRC to be VP, but she will decline

Again, the Democrats will not learn their lesson and go with the more liberal of the two, namely Kerry. 1) They will ride and ride on his 'superior' military record as compared to W. 2) He is getting all the constiuencies to get the nomination - minorities, labor unions, pro-choice, etc. While they turn out (and make sure they get their fellow consituents out) for the primaries and caucusi, it just doesn't apply to the general election. 3) Southerner vs Southerrn in November? Democrat leaders see that as a no-win situation. A moderate/conservative leaning Democrat won't cut it in November in states like New York, New Jersey, and California (and, please, Bill Clinton was not a moderate).

A Kerry/HRC team would bring the Republican vote out like this country has never seen.....

Depends though.....my roomie was saying if Dean's supporters swing towards Edwards, which I personally don't think likely, I think he'll continue to try and divide the party and not endorse either of them, but if he does endorse Edwards I think that could bring him enough delegates to give Kerry a good run for his money.
Personally, I would love to see a Bush/Edwards race, I think it'd be a lot cleaner fight and would stick more to the issues than a Bush/Kerry. But it'd be a tough decision for me, there are a few MAJOR issues I have with our side's social views and depending on what Edwards has to say about them, I'd really have to think about this. With Kerry it'd be a no brainer. I'd write in Mickey Mouse before I voted for him.
I really wish there was a moderate third option for those of us firmly ensconced in the center. Fiscally conservative, but socially a little more....I won't say liberal per se, but more pro-choice, and I mean in general, not just about the "A" word, but about most social issues....like the gay marriage thing, stem cell research, euthanasia, stuff like that. Leave it to the individual and keep the government out of it kind of thing. I just really resent lawmakers making broad based decisions for the rest of us based on their own philosophy. Who is anyone else to dictate your morality, you know? We were just discussing moral development in my class last night and it was really interesting to see how all the students defined morality. Almost everyone took the viewpoint that it was an individual process. Aren't a lot of the social issues really "moral" questions when you look at them microscopically?

I'd like to see Edwards pull it out, but I don't think it will happen. At this point, I would lean towards Bush over Kerry, but Edwards would definitely make me rethink things. (neither Bush or Kerry excite me at all)
I rather like Edwards, but admit to not knowing all that much about him. I am glad Dean is out. He was more devisive than anything IMHO.

I'm not so sure. I think that if HRC is worried that a Kerry/Edwards ticket might win, she'll actively seek the VP bid.

I like Edwards and was very close to supporting him during the Iowa Caucus. The reason I didn't was that I like most Democratic voters up to this point in the nomination process was that I perceived Kerry to be the stronger candidate against Bush in November. Now that Bush looks even more beatable then he did in January, many Dems are just going with the one the like better, and if it comes purely down to that then Edwards has a shot...as I think in general, especially on TV, that Edwards comes across as a more sincere and likable personality then Kerry.
That being said, it will be an extremely uphill fight for Edwards...he needs to win nearly 60% of remaining delegates to lock up nomination before the convention...that is a daunting task at this stage...
On another note neither Kerry or Edwards will ask (or for that matter even be seen on stage with Hillary)...
also, Genie if you are fiscally conservative how can you vote for Bush?...he's signed every spending bill to reach his desk...

I knoooooooooowwwww....I'm still cutting my teeth on that one! I really had high hopes for him when he first got elected but the deficit spending thing is becoming a cause for concern. Not ready to jump off the wingnut bandwagon just yet though, I still have NO desire to give up any more of my hard earned money than I have to.

Mega---if the rich don't spend the economy goes stagnant.
I'm like Genie. kerry vs Bush.....no brainer. I will even admit, that issues have nothing to do with that decision. I can't have his wife as first lady. I think Edwards might give moderates something to look at and would actually do better against Bush. Again the Kerry/Edwards ticket would not get my vote, but I think that wouldn't be the worst thing politically for Edwards.

i'm not sure where you're going with this...but the trickle down theory is a very simplistic view of how our economy works in my opinion...

yes...it's sad that only one person in this country really understands anything about our economy. And that an average person can take several elective economics course and not be able to scratch the surface of grasping how our system works. ??????I have no idea where I'm going with this---and that the given truth!!!!
