I am looking into purchasing a camelbak, for when I go on my longer bike rides.

I like and highly recommend. I have the Camelbak Classic, which holds 2 liters. I have only used the entire reservoir for very long rides (3+ hrs) or in very hot conditions. I much prefer it over a water bottle, but mostly for trail riding. The major benefit is that you can carry a lot of water and not have to take a hand off the bars to drink. I find that very few road bikers use them however. Not sure why.

If the pros don't use it, they wont. Usage has gone up but still has not broken into the hammer head circles.

I can understand why the pro's don't use them, they have support vehicles where they can swap bottles of water, gatorade, etc, as they need too, and perhaps on some of the longer club ride, they may have vehicles too.

Is it aerodynamics maybe? I imagine being bent over the aerobars would make a person's back the main surface to keep smooth, no?

I have one and I love it. This is mine.

I have a road bike. I am no where near pro but I ride longer tours on the surface of the sun, also known as rural Texas, so I need lots of water and find it convenient to have it with me to prevent as much stopping. I could stop every 15-20 miles at the few convenience stores/back wooks bbq place/etc I find to refill my 20 oz bottles in my cages, or I be sure I have water at all times and have 70 oz in my insulated camel back and actually drink a lot more and more easily with the little hose right there. I don't even notice the weight of it and I sweat enough all over that I don't think I sweat more behind the camel. I have dehydrated before on the bike during a 90 degree ride. It wasn't pretty.

Added bonus: it allows me (nearly albino) to shove a normal sized sunscreen bottle in the reservoir compartment, rather than having a small (and risk running out) one in my back pocket or saddle bag. love love love love it. Did I mention I recommend it? Mr. Green

I think the pros probably don't use them because as Cappy said they don't need to, they have support vehicles, plus the aerodynamics and extra weight.

PS, mine is 2 or 3 years old, now they make them with larger reservoir 'bladder' openings. I just upgraded my bladder this year to the new kind. I recommend that type as its easier to get a lot of ice in there, which I think is key. I also recommend only putting water in it as its hard to clean sticky stuff out. Also, dry it thoroughly each time (or leave it full of water) otherwise moldy spots form. The spots aren't tough to get out with a bleach water combo, but leave a gross looking permanant stain.

To those folks that have them or have used them. Does the weight of the water have any effect on riding. It seems the design distributes the weight pretty well.

It feels weird at first, but you quickly get used it. I have the 70oz model. As Cheryl said, it gets very hot down here and most of the best riding routes do not have that many places to refill water bottles. I like mine.

Nope. I really don't even notice it while riding. If I don't have the straps set tight enough, it wil hang off to a side while twisting and turning on the mtn bike. It's also quite durable - I've landed square on it and not even a leak.

LOL

I got that one Sidewinder.
And your avatar sucks! Razz

I have one and love it! I used it the entire time I was in Florida running outdoors and now use it here as well when I do my long runs. It's lightweight and convenient.
