October 1st update:

What kind of things have you received in your goodie bags at races? Any suggestions?

(like there are any non-racers here )

What are some cool/unique things you've seen at races?

What are some of your common complaints?

That's right, I'm in 'data-mode'.

nothing too interesting...
I've seen a couple of guys running shirtless in temps in the low to mid 40s and I was startled in that same race by another who emitted an annoyingly large belch...

Thanks Tim. have you ever seen anything cool/unique that the race director's have done though?

Good shirts

Start on time

Have an accurately measured course

Provide volunteers on the course with a list of bib numbers and names so they can encourage each runner by name during the race. I did a 9 mile race and they did this and it rocked my face off

Have an announcer at the finish line also calling out people's names

Get a local massage school to provide after race massages

Have Shelflife play after the race

Get some of the running stores to donate stuff for you to raffle off after the race

Here is a good one that I don't see too often, but it has happened at 4 different races and I liked it. They sent out "Thank you" cards to all of the runners a few weeks after the race. The cards thanked you for coming out to the race and then listed your time, overall finish, and age group finish, then finally reminded to you come back the next year.

Have me and runswithscissors talk smack to the other racers and fans

Well not yet but I expect to see it this on a 10k I'm registered to run on Oct 26th when the racers have been encouraged by the directors to wear Halloween costumes. Another cool thing I like are draw prizes (though I haven't won one yet).

check out the big brain on X!

excellent list and I LOVE the idea of having volunteers knowing names and cheering people on! (historically, this race has had too many volunteers)...You just solved it, X.

We're bringing back the massage tent as well (it was a hit last year)...Oh, and we're advertising the hell out it as well...who doesn't want a free massage?

like the thank you card idea too...

Chip timing is getting pretty standard for everything but small 5ks

Do not run out of water/Gatorade. This has happened to me 3 times, not cool.

post race, the longer the race the better the buffet should be.

Marshells at every turn. preferably two especially in longer events

Have someone call out the names comming down the finish. You can't mention everyone; but, it is a great feeling and an extra push for mid-packers trying to bring it home.

I like the idea of having music, both at the start and the finish.

Also, having an announcer naming the people as they come in is a great feature too!

Shelf,

I always wished that RD's would mark the first 1/2 mile so that I could tell if I was way off pace for the run. To help fight the jack rabbit tendancy.

I always enjoy loud music at the start and end of a race.
And a raffle always keeps people hanging out a little longer. I never pass up a raffle!

Y'all rock! Paul, the 1/2 mile marker will be in effect. And coach and dancer, there will definitely be music at the start and finish line (yanni, no?)

Bob, it's just a small 5K (for now) so I may look at chip timing down the road...do you have a link that I could investigate the cost and such?

Keep em coming! Mr. Green

How about free airfare for all those flying in for the race from Sioux Falls, SD?

If you can make that happen, I'm like, there dude.

Yanni, no! It's Kenny G or nothing, you young punk!

Live music is the way to go - how 'bout those drum-a-thon boys up by you?

How about just standard stuff like awards 3 deep in age groups divided up in 5 year increments?

That's mostly what I look for.
