Thanks Bob! I'll look into it. The key is to make it a race that both appeals to newbies and vets...
As for live music, I doubt it. Probably too much of a hassle...but you never know!
PH, definitely gonna break it down to every 5 years for awards...
Coach, I can't pay you airfare but I ASSURE you that a cookout post-race at my house will off da HIZZLE!!!

Maybe, you could get an airline "sponsorship"?
I can see the TV commercials now. We at Norwest airlines help fulfill the foolish dreams of getting party animals together.

Start on time
Have an accurately measured course
Provide volunteers on the course with a list of bib numbers and names so they can encourage each runner by name during the race. I did a 9 mile race and they did this and it rocked my face off
Have an announcer at the finish line also calling out people's names
Get a local massage school to provide after race massages
Have Shelflife play after the race
Get some of the running stores to donate stuff for you to raffle off after the race
Here is a good one that I don't see too often, but it has happened at 4 different races and I liked it. They sent out "Thank you" cards to all of the runners a few weeks after the race. The cards thanked you for coming out to the race and then listed your time, overall finish, and age group finish, then finally reminded to you come back the next year.
Have me and runswithscissors talk smack to the other racers and fans |
These are great! The donation from a running store is a must! Free stuff and advertising for your race and new customers for the store.
Do a search for 'champion chip'. You should find their website and prices, etc.

The half mile marker is a good idea.
Also, for the 5k, be sure to post every mile - including the 3rd one. I know that it is only .1 to the finish, but some anal retentive runners like myself still like to see what the mile spilts are. Also, when you hit mile 3, you know to kick in the afterburners.
I hate it when the miles aren't marked and I wish every race would put a sign up for Mile 3. It doesn't seem like that much work to do, no?
Oh, and go to a local gym and get some buff studs and young hotties to wear speedos and string bikinis to hold up the mile marker signs. Kind of like ring girls in boxing. I think this could be the next big breakthrough in racing.

Well, I'm going to be sporting my cool-max 'extra-huggy' manties, that's for damn sure!
Yet another good idea about the 3 miler mark. Looks like it'll only cost $25 to get this course certified. Has anyone actually done all the measuring/paperwork to get it certified?

X already said most of mine. My favorite race of all time had music blaring all morning beforehand, then after the national anthem, they started playing the theme to 'Rocky' right at the start, it was hysterical and everyone started the race with a laugh. They also had our names/numbers and it was a small enough race that when we finished they were saying 'CONGRATS TO PFFFF FROM HOUSTON!!!' on the loud speaker and this crowd of locals (it was a small town) was cheering their hearts out. They also gave each finisher a long stem rose. Breakfast tacos and ice cream at the finish (it was a 10 miler). But I digress. I also like a good shirt, sadly, something as shallow as that can bring racers, and I also like people calling splits at mile markers. And if you do happen to do chips, I like people to bend down and cut them off of me at the end, that way you don't lose a chip and I don't have to vomit at the finish line.
Sweet that you already have the massages!

yet more good ideas from the texan! ice cream is a good one. I've already cancelled out Chips for now, kids...too small of a race so perhaps as this gets bigger (and it WILL).
Music will be blared at the beginning and I was going to do the Rocky theme as well. Also, we'll have crowd supporters screaming out names and such...
Thanks pfff...from HOUSTON!!!!

I agree with everything that's been said so far, too.
Especially the accurate mile markers for 1, 2, and 3. You'd think this would be easy enough, but I have been to a race where they were really off. And the mile marker at 3 is really nice, although for me it's not for pacing, it's to see how much longer I have to be upright.
The massages are great! How long will this race be?

PLEASE OH PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD AND RIGHT DO NOT PLAY THE THEME FROM 'ROCKY' AT ALL!!!
It's tired, it's worn out, and it is just SO OVERUSED! Oh, and I personally cannot stand the stupid song.
Make your race different from every other stinkin' race in this country and play something different. Something funky, or trance, or dance. Something with a good beat that you can dance to.

Oh. My. Gosh.
And how about if instead of medals, they were HUGE CLOCKS, old school style, and the clock was digital, and it had YOUR FINISHING TIME ON IT!!!
