We have a Christmas project:
build a model of DNA.
We can't use the prefab kit at craft stores. (I didn't even know they existed)
Can't use food items.
Makes 'em happy if we use recycled items.
Ideas? Help?
Thanks in advance to all who answer....

Ideally you want at least 4 different colours for the 4 different bases of the nucleotides (thymine, cytosine, guanine, adenine). I was also thinking if you have a lego set at home. That may be useful.

Sounds like a job for pipe cleaners, in multicolors like Tim suggested. Legos would be cool but it would be hard to get that double helix (or I never got that talented with my mad lego skillz anyway)

this is good..
or buy a big bag of dots candy (kind of like non sugar coated gumdrops) and use matching colored toothpicks...
or cut circles out of old soda cans for the bases......
dental floss for the bonds?....

Can't you find pop bottles in different colors?
Do you have dried out markers? Use the lids from those (or from pens).
To connect them together, use pieces of the spiral bound from an old notebook.
Ok. That's it for my ideas now. I'll keep thinking though.
