Poets and Slaves '05 starts out at the S'no'w Fun Run, Lake Geneva WI

This was the first time I have gone into a race concerned. Most of you know what happened in my last race, and my overriding anxiety was what if I get hurt again? To get over that hurdle, I set a goal of my training pace for this week, 10:30/mile, or 52:30 for the race. I would be ecstatic with 10 minutes per.

On getting to Grand Geneva (the resort where the race is held), I thought I would have to add to that goal. This was the worst of the three years for conditions - not so much the weather as the roads. They had patches of packed snow and ice. To boot, traffic was allowed to work the roads during the race - another first. Shocked

The race starts with a run downhill of about 1/4 mile. About ten seconds into it, something happens that happened in Chicago. I get heel-clipped again. As I bring my leg around, I'm telling myself, "Well, this is it, butt-head." I step down on the foot. NOTHING. NO PAIN. I was so damn happy I could have cried (but it was so frickin' cold I couldn't).

The first mile is fast, as always, because of the hill, and therefore the fifth mile will be slow. The whole race I could not get a good rhythm; I felt it was the after-effects of my chest congestion not letting me get good, deep breaths. But I knew I was going at a pace way faster than the 10:30 goal, even the 10 (?). I was hitting the watch at the markers, but not looking. I didn't care - I only wanted to finish. I do. AND NO PAIN.

Now the specs: Time - 44:58.90 ( 8:59.78 ! ). Splits - 8:21.99, 8:56.00, 8:56.87, 9:07.38, 9:36.66. Overall finish 309 of 466. AG 8 of 10 (a poor man's top ten, but I'll take it Razz ). A nice finisher's medal - shaped like a mug of beer Mr. Green .

Post race party - no hams were thrown into the crowd this year. Had the traditional free shot of peppermint schnapps, and brews - you know this was going to be an adventure when the official beverage is Louie's Demise Amber Ale. This was actually the 25th anniversary for this race. When it started, Grand Geneva was a Playboy Resort, and to commemorate this, they had women dressed in Playboy Bunny costumes. Now this is not the kind of setting for a wholesome, clean-cut, all-American boy like yours truly to be at. So I made sure that I got myself out after a couple hours. Or so. Dancing Banana

But I am back from my injuries, and that is better than any hardware I could have gotten. I'm a happy boy. Very Happy

Cappy is right, it is a five mile race. This is why we have a good group here... I had no idea I'd omitted the distance!
