Posted: 09/18/05 - 16:25 Post subject: Buckeye 1/2 Marathon Race Report
Short version: My pretty standard 1/2 marathon finish in 2.01 or 2.02...
Long Version:
I woke up from my marathon nightmare to find my hamstring hurt. At 5am. WTF? What on earth makes one hamstring hurt at 5am? I didn't run for two days (my taper) and did nothing physical on Saturday. Oh well. I drive two hours north and see Rob, who got there a bit after me. I go for a mile warm up for the Dorks (go Dorks!!!) and then so I can stretch out my legs. I can't believe how stiff my legs are.
There are pace groups at this 1/2 marathon. I find the 2:00 pace guy and hope I can stick with him. Bob, the pacer, tells me he's going to run even splits and stay at a 9.09 pace. Ok!
We're off. At mile 2, Bob is running a 8.40 something. (I run with my Garmin, so I know my pace.) I fade on Bob.
Another runner strikes us a conversation with me, and when I offer my comments on running the 2 hour 1/2 marathon, another runner chimes in. His name is either Greg or Derek, and he also run the Charity 1/2 Marathon which I did.
I end up running with these two guys for almost the whole race, which is highly unusal for me. I am usually all by myself. They kept me occupied from miles 3-9, with our chatter about what races we have, and all that other runner talk. This was GREAT because my hamstring hurt pretty badly throughout the whole race, and they distracted me from it, and we kept on very nice pacing.
Splits were:
916
908
904
913
915
901
906
919
927
929
912
941
858
My time: 2.01.5, official race 2.02 something
We lost Greg/Derek somewhere after the hill about mile 9, I thought he was right behind me. Bill was a great pacer in that I felt I was fading about mile 11 and he told me to stick with him, so he and I ran the whole thing in. Very cool.
Rob stuck around to see me finish and get something to drink, which was really nice, as he finished a good 25 minutes in front of me (as usual!).
I'm pleased with my pacing. This has been pretty much my usual time for the 1/2 marathon, barring the ones with heat conditions. Sometime I'm going to properly taper for a 1/2 marathon and see what I could really run.
Medical inquiry: Besides my hamstring, I now have a bad pain on the outside of my right thigh. This hurts from the outside of my knee all the way up my right thigh. I also had some pain in my right buttock too during the race. I'm pretty sure this sounds like the dreaded IT Band?
I've iced it down for the last hour so it's pretty numb, but any medical suggestions are welcome, I haven't even started reading about what could be wrong yet. TIA!

A nice report, and nice race, Kimba.
I won't give any opinions or advice on your leg situation as I don't pretend to have the medical expertise. But I can wish you a speedy and cmplete recovery.

very smart run kimba; pacing is so even, great job on another half
outside leg pain could be ITB; mine usually shows up in my knee though, outside pain on knee from an overtight tendon above. i can control this with a stretch, and it usually shows up after i haven't run for a while and then go back at it.
butt pain is most likely piriformis muscle spasm.
nice half kim!

Could be IT, could be hamstring, could just be what I call "stiff leg syndrome" too. Have you had any lower back pain too?
Stretch - hamstring, quads, adductors and glutes/piriformis. Then tennis ball....Back up to a wall. Place a tennis ball between your glute and the wall. Lean back and roll the tennis ball all over the glute and hip area. Spend extra time leaning on the tender spots. Spend about 5 minutes doing this and repeat several times a day.
Stretch again.
Good luck .

Excellent race, Kimba. I envy your pacing and time!
Sorry to hear of your aches and pains. I find that I have stuff like that creep up all the time and it tends to go away, so I don't really pursue treatment.
Maybe I'm just keeping my head in the sand or 'gasp' I'm just getting old!
Not that you are, of course.
Good luck on your recovery.
