Duathlon date was April 8, 2006

Friday April 7: Leave home at 1215; go about 10 minutes realize left the helmet at home - turn around and finally depart at 1245. Heavy traffice in the usual places in NJ. Early sign up ends at 1800 - get there at 1730. All done, bike inspected, weighed in for Clydesdale - Recorder says only two people in my division: Clydesdale over 50.

Saturday April 8:

Weather was a lousy as you can imagine it could get in April. Started about 60ish, lost about 20 degrees by the end of the race 2.5 hours later.

At the last transition, there were ice pellets hitting me in the face.

5K: Race goes off at about 0800 - I'm in the first wave; let me tell you these people are FAST !!! Usually I'm in some sort of little group but this time I was on my own. VERY fast people.

30K bike: We set off on the bike ride. First we have to cross this small drawbridge with a metal grate surface. Its like driving on ice. Made it through. Started the climb on the big freakin tall bridge !!. The bridge felt like it was a mile long. Long steady uphill followed by a long steady downhill. Rain coming down farly lightly. Go out 15K and make my return, the weather changes, rain is heavier, winds stronger. Go back up the long freakin bridge. Chain pops off, Stop to repair, trail truck comes by and offers me a ride back. Not quitting now, despite the wind and almost horizontal rain.

Wind was so strong I actually had to pedal while going downhill. Slowed down for the steel bridge, made it across and back to the transfer point. that's when the ice pellets were coming at me.

Last 5K: Heavy rain and winds, colder. Fortunately I have on a Cool Max over shirt that I normally wear in winter. Finish run, worst pace ever for me.

At the end I discover no awards, almost everyone is gone. I grabbed about 6 bottles of water, and am regretting I did not grab a couple of pizzas out of the about 20 they had sitting there. Oh well.

My times were:

Not wanting to make excuses but... if the weather had been nicer I know this would have been better.

Coming home I was frozen, called MIL from car to make coffee. Took about a 20 minute shower to thaw out.

And that's how I spent my April weekend.

While in the crowd, my wife spots Jim Fossel former Giants Coach and now QB Coach for the Ravens, his son was competing. We have an autograph.

PS: Forgot to mention shrinkage and chafing...

Since you were in the area you know first hand about the weather. It was awful !!! You can tell the wind is bad when tops of trees without leaves are swaying and... large wet flags are flying straight out from the flagpoles. (I rate that sign as 30mph winds)

Photos available at the Riff Raff...
