Posted: 11/08/04 - 11:41 Post subject: Book Requests for the Book Club
Since we'll be starting this Book Club up by December (or so, y'all can start reading early when we get the book picked out), I figure I should put in a book request thread.
I don't know how many people are planning on buying the books, but i know that I can't, so I have to use the library to get books. We have 8 recommendations (a couple I came up with), but looking through my library system, only 4 are available. Two are new releases and are on order for purchase, which means that it could still be several months. I don't know what libraries you all use, so I can't randomly search your library pages for availability (though I am willing to do so to ease this whole process).
So, here are the recommended books. The ones my library has are in bold.
The Two Percent Solution: Fixing America's Problems in Ways Liberals and Conservatives Can Love - Matthew Miller
The Two Americas: Our Current Political Deadlock and How to Break It - Stanley Greenberg
AMERICA'S SECRET WAR: Inside the Hidden Worldwide Struggle Between America and Its Enemies - George Friedman
Character: Profiles In Presidential Courage by Chris Wallace
Who'll Tell the People - William Grider
Wealth and Democracy - Kevin Phillips
Terror in the Name of God - Jessica Stern
Culture War? - Morris Fiorina
The 9/11 Commision Report (20 copies, 37 holds at my lib)
If there is a book that we should at to the list for consideration, let me know and I'll add it. Some books, like America's Secret War, will probably be easier to get a library copy of in the future, so we'll probably still get to them depending on how long the book club runs.
One note: as an "On Topic" book club we are probably leaning towards topical books, but by the time we get to them and are ready to discuss them, they may not be as topical as they were when the book was first suggested.

I checked out a copy of this book from my library a couple weeks ago and I just couldn't get into it.

It was nominated for a National Book Award, so I figured it might be better written.

I'll never get through the books at the rate the club will, so I might just check on ebay when all of you are selling them back.

I think the "Two Per Cent Solution" is a good place to start.
However, "Who'll Tell the People" is a classic. I read in '92 when it first came out.
