I wasn't sure about this run. I haven't run since mid December and I really had no expectations. I woke up and was feeling great. I decided to see what I could do with a 6+ month absence from running. I figured I might as well try. Shelee and Runswithscissors both volunteered to run with me and I wouldn't let them. I knew they both could have great runs and didn't want to slow them down. My goal: Survival and to hopefully run without having to walk.
I started out feeling great, I had to remind myself that this was going to be a looooonnnng 3 miles and to just take it slow. The first mile went by pretty good. At the start of the 2nd mile I hit the first uphill. After tackling the hill I started to develop a little knot in my back right by the shoulder blade. This caused a stabbing like pain every time I inhaled deeply. (I.e. the rest of the race ) The second hill was pretty tough but I was still feeling pretty good. Then comes the 3rd hill, this one was rough. I was very tempted to start crawling by the end of this hill. The knot had grown pretty tight by this point too. But I presisted. Coming into the final half mile I came across some young kids (15 year olds) who were walking (the would run and then walk), I talked with them a little and gave them crap about "cheating" and that this old man was going to beat them and I haven't run in 6 months. I think these kids are what kept me going, they gave me something to think about other than the pain in my back. When all was said and done, I finished and I didn't have to walk. My time was 27:12 203rd overall, 148 for men and 9th in my age group. Shelee and RWS did great in their races too!
I am pleased as punch just to be able to run again. We'll see what tomorrow brings, I may have trouble moving my legs and I will spend the day on an airplane.
Here is a pic of Me, Shelee and Runswithscissors

I had to wait and get over my extreme jealousy before I responded. (not running 6 months and still runs faster than me)
Glad you're back at it, and that you had such a great support group.

Awesome Job RB Amigo!
27:10 is not to be slighted for not having any training going on at all. Kudos to you on getting out there and running that race!
You met your goals:
1) You Survived!
2) You did not walk!
I hope that this is the beginning of many more race reports to come. We all want to see you out there training again.
Have a great flight South of the Border tomorrow. I hope you're not sore! J/K

Great Job RB!!!
Anytime you finish a race that is a plus. As soon as you can start training again I am sure everything else will fall into place.

I'll say again, "You haven't run in 6 months and you finished in 27 minutes?" Holy Cow...I want to be you when I grow up.
Nice race and hope this is the start of the rest of your running year.
