So are you saying it's not appropriate to bring a box of undies to distribute at your Speed Dating party?
"Hi, I'm Fred. I'm an attorney here in the city. My interests are theater, reading, and seeing you in these sheer crotchless panties."
DING! Next table!

It depends, but I used to try really hard not to do it on the first date.
I wasn't always successful.

Then it should most definitely happen before you see his/her undies. |
Interesting. I kissed Kramer on our first date. In fact, I think on most of my first dates there was a kiss.
I don't think I want a first date. Can I just skip to the fifth?!

Like I said. I wasn't always successful. Actually, it was more that I had this impossible standard that I tried, in vane, to hold myself to.

Any man who gives a woman underwear/lingerie is completely uninspired.

After you've had sex with this person and you are truly dating and pursuing a relationship (i.e. you are not just f*cking and not friends only who sometimes f*ck). Intimate gifts (of any kind) are very personal and indicate a certain level of trust in a relationship and a silent overture that you wish for this relationship to continue.
Intimate gifts should not be the only gift. It should be an extra fun gift. Give her a real gift, something important to her. Something that shows you've been paying attention to her or listening intently.
Examples:
She says "you know, my feet are always cold" and you buy her some electric heated slippers...or
She's ALWAYS baking and mixing, so you buy her the really cool Kitchen Aid mixer---trust me this is ALWAYS an acceptable gift
She loves Margaritas and has a crappy blender...buy her stuff to make margaritas and a good blender (Kitchen Aid is a great brand...)

I respectfully disagree.
I think it's a wonderful spontaneous gift. I can't say I'd love it for a birthday or Christmas, but to come home to a surprise package or to find it on the bed when we've gone out of town for a long weekend. . .it's a welcome treat.

edit to say: oh criminy... i didn't mean it THAT way... I meant fun to show it |
absolutely!
absolutely!
And I'd say after the first mention of unmentionables is the time to offer unmentionables since now they are mentionable.

I think it's a really nice gift. It brings romance.

When a certain someone has gifted me with an undie set (we've been married a long time--we double-dated with Moses) I see it as a really nice thing.
Because the man is totally out of his realm, out of what he knows. But goes out on a limb anyway. He could have said, "Hey honey, here's the best beer and chips and dip combo you could ever want to watch the game with. I got them for you." and that also would have been romantic in its own weird way. But he didn't. He got me sets. Hugely romantic, I think.
In fact, hey Rex. How you doin'?

I buy Mrs Boiler stuff from time to time, usually as a surprise not for an event. Now if I can just convince her to wear it more.
