Ok, I found MY Xmas present. A Fuji Silhouette. Good bike for the price--$500. I have looked at tons of bikes and decided this was the best buy for my limited budget.

I go to the bike store at lunch with the intent to buy..until...

I priced a helmet, shoes, a pair of riding shorts, cheap computer, water cages.... Sad Now I am way over budget and have to wait a month Sad Sad Sad I knew all of this would cost, but I didn't expect Shocked

It kept looking at me with those "take me home" eyes.....but all I could say was I promise to come back.

It's true, buying the bike is only half of the expense of owning one. All of the extra 'goodies' can really add up quickly. Just be glad you live in the Southwest and can still get some riding in.

I know exactly what you mean. I find this really cute outfit on sale, but
then you add on the shoes, purse, jewelry, etc. it ends up costing a fortune. Mr. Green It gets really expensive when you accessorize.

I bet they don't cut any deals in gub'ment towns, either, do they? They figure no one there is suffering no matter how bad the economy gets.

I feel your pain, Alan. Sort of. My credit card bill felt your pain, anyway! Mr. Lambda got us a tandem in August or September, and the bike has been the least expensive part!

I hope you get to take 'er home soon!

Not in that gub ment town, Austin is EXPENSIVE Shocked

But Alan--yea! Get the bike! Then you can do the MS 150 with me and 10,000 of my closest friends! Mr. Green

The accessories definitely can add up to be more expensive than the bike unfortunately....
Have you looked at www.nashbar.com for accessories? Its the cheapest place I can find (by far) and so far everything's been good quality.

Keep us posted if you get the bike or not!!

Maybe 20 years ago Austin was a cheap gubment town, but the high tech boom put a quick end to that. Even in bad times costs here are higher than in most places. They offered me a 10 per cent discount on everything else, but even then it was costly.

Good news is you can ride here year around. Cheryl, believe it or not, I am buying the bike because some of they guys I run with want to do the Hotter Than Hell 100 in Wichita Falls next August.

What kind of bike is that exactly? I don't mean the brand name, do they call it a street bike or something. I have mountain bike I bought years ago when they were all the rage. While vacationing in CO I went bike riding for a day and rented a bike there. They called it a "cruiser" and it was really neat! Way better than my bike. They said they would sell it to me for $150 but I had no way to get it home. I've been looking around tho.

It is a road bike with flat handle bars. Very lightweight aluminum frame, steel fork, Tiagra.

Shocked You're crazier than I am!!!

The MS 150 would be just a casual training ride for that monster and its 80 miles longer!! You should think about it though... www.ms150.org
Training starts soon! I can't wait!

Explain, please. Also, I thought about looking around the pawn shops--but I am convinved if I did find a great bike that it would be stolen. Just the risk of buying a stolen bike keeps me away. Not that I am afraid that it would be discovered, but I don't want to in any way be in the chain of something that promotes theft. Besides, I could you imagine how embarrasing it would be if one day someone lookes at your bike and says "That's my stolen bike! I have the police report! I am calling the cops."

a)

b) I'm hoping to get a new trainer for Christmas.

Explain, please. "

part a) Greg got his bike from his twin brother Joe. A free bike that fits perfectly.

part b) I'm hoping Santa brings me either this or this. My current trainer is supah noisy and it isn't smooth at all. Doesn't offer much resistance either.
