That little plastic disc that sits between the cassette & spokes on my rear wheel broke a couple of tabs and has come loose. Now it just spins around a bunch and is generally annoying.
What does that thing do? Is it there is keep debris from getting caught in the cassette? Can I just take the d@mn thing off?

Ba-bye. Take it off.
It is supposed to stop the chain from going into the spokes.

My LBS dude said the same thing
Everytime I have taken my bike to the LBS, he has replaced mine.

It's not important, but if your chain would happen to go into the spokes... it'd thrash it pretty good.

It's called a dork disc. Remove it promptly. It's the bicycling equivalent of a pocket protector.
