Do you? I'm surprised at how often I notice bikers that don't or signal the wrong way. Last night I was a few blocks behind a neighborhood guy that bikes 12/365 and watched him use hand signals at turns. I'm sure he was wrong compared to the way I learned and do.
How do you signal?

Turn left = stick my left arm out and point left

turn right = stick my right arm out and point right

I don't signal stops. I only stop at controlled intersections, just like everyone else.

How often do I signal? Only when there's someone else to see the signal.

Okay, am I having a brain fart? I thought all signals were with the left hand. Extended left for a left and bent at the elbow extended up for a right. I don't signal stops either, but signal turns 'cuz there's so little traffic, cars seem to creep up on me.

That whole doing all the signals with one arm thing originated with cars because nobody's right arm is long enough to stick out of the right side of the car to signal.

I signal even when no one's around -- like this with my left arm:

I don't signal for stops when coming to intersections...never think to do it. I probably wouldn't remember to do it in an emergency, either! From what I understand about group riding (haven't done it yet) is that one raises one's arm when about to drop out of a draft line.

Right turn signal is acceptable (legal) with both left are bent and right arm straight out. Since motorists can't even remember where their turn signal is, I don't expect them to remember the left arm right turn signal so I use the straight right arm. The straight right arm is the preferred method for all cyclists in my area.

Well on my bike i use the left arm versions when someone is around to see them. on my skates though i use BOTH arms. i form a right angle and point to which direction i am going, the other arm up in the air. for a stop both arms UP and in a fist. These are what are taught with the National Skate Patrol. I assume the straight up arm is just to grab more visual attention from the drivers.

Embarassed I never signal, and I roll stop signs and red lights. Of course when I ride there is hardly anyone out on the roads either

OK, I roll stops signs too Embarassed I'm still going much slower then most cars thru the stop sign. We finally got a stop sign at our corner this summer. People doing 40+ in a 25 slow down to about 25 for the stop sign and get angry when we point to it. It is a major school bus stop with 5-6 buses each morning and afternoon.

Don't let your brother see you!!! Wink

Jrjo, I remember the signals you mention but no one does them and I would guess a lot of drivers don't know what they mean. I do like PH, left turns: left arm extended straight out, right turns: right arm extended straight out. If I'm riding with a group, I put a hand behind my back and yell SLOWING or STOPPING to the other cyclists when I'm doing either of those, and if I'm trying to pass another cyclist I signal that I'm moving out of the right side over to the left to pass them by pointing left to the space I'm moving to, then telling the cyclist "on your left".

I rarely signal. The only time I would need to is if I have to turn left and leave the right shoulder. I find it a little pointless to signal a right turn when it doesn't affect anyone. If there's a left turn lane at a light or something, I fall in line with the cars and just take it when the light goes green. Sticking to a side in that situation is a good way to get hit.

I do the same. If I'm signalling to the bunch behind, then the signals are behind the back, and either hand and fingers, depending on what I'm signalling eg glass on road move out abit.

I've also been know to use some other hand/finger signals when car drivers cut too close Embarassed .
