If your shift ended at midnight, would you still bike to and from work?
I don't really see a problem with it [except for when the cheapo LED blinking tail light you bought breaks off in the first 3 miles, not that I know anything about that...], and really enjoy the serenity. I feel safe enough, but I could see how other people would freak out about doing it. Though I nearly shat my shorts when I jumped some deer on the side of the highway.

I dont commute by bike during the day or at night but I would probably do it no matter what time if it was saving me quite a bit of money.

I'd do it around here in a second. I ride sometimes at 4:00am so not a lot different. I'm not sure I'd do it in a bigger city though or on the HIGHWAY!

I'd rather ride in the dark at midnight than ride in the dark @ 7AM during the winter during rush hour.
Spend a few bucks and get some good LEDs from Performance or Nashbar. The higher-end ones are really bright.

Depends on where you live and how safe you feel and how safe you really are.

No way in h-e-double-hockey-sticks would I ride my bike around here at midnight, unless the bike was in a tank.
