I have to start by saying I have been fighting with my bike all week and have come to the conclusion that God doesn't want me to have three chain rings. It was in the shop for a day and then our bike mechanic guru friend fought with it for two hours the night before we left, to no avail. I can have full gearage on two rings, but don't ask for three.

Swim 750 m 26:30
The Bighorn takes place in a beautiful little mountain resort just outside of Kamloops, BC. The name of the lake we swam in is called Lac Le Jeune and it is quite possibly the coldest water I have ever submerged myself in. It was so cold that when I started out every time I put my face in the water I would have that gasping reflex from the shocking cold and almost suck in a lung full of water. I had to fight off a major panic attack as all my muscle groups were seizing up and it was so cold my brain wasn't even firing on all cylinders. There was another woman on my shoulder and we sort of nursed each other through it.

Bike 20 km 55:30
My chain fell off three times, so probably 5-7 minutes of my bike time is actually me dead on the side of the road trying to get my chain back on. After the third episode I realized I wan't going to be able to use my little chain ring so I was going to have to stop being such a p*ssy and climb the hills in my middle ring. Did I mention we were in the mountains? You were either climbing or flying.
The same woman passed me all three times I was broken down. I was waaayyy faster than her on the bike and would have bicycularly dominated her had my chain stayed on. I was so mad the third time that I caught her and passed her at 46 km/h going UPHILL. I didn't know I had it in me.

Run 5 km 36:00
Did I mention we were in the mountains? You leave transition and head straight uphill for 1/2 mile. Then after that it's more rolling stuff. I felt strong on the run but got a stitch in my side about a mile in and had to walk a bit to shake it off.

I never cease to be amazed by how friendly and supportive triathletes are of each other. When I crossed the finish line the girl I swam by hugged me (it took me a moment to figure out who she was) and the lady who kept passing me on the bike asked if I got it fixed alright. Even the speedsters who went by me were encouraging and nice.

At my first race I felt like maybe I could have put out a bit more effort but today I know I left it all out on the course. It was a great race, unbelievably challenging course, I was slower than I would have liked but I finished strong and am confident I gave it my all. Will definitely go again next year!

And with an attitude like that, you'll have nothing but success.

A terrific race, and a terrific report, Shannon! thumbs up

dance Wow, great race!! I don't know how you tri-atheletes do it. It's bad enough I got to worry about my shoes and my body, don't throw anothe piece of equipment in there! Congratulations on leaving it all out there on the course!

Looks like you pinned on some of that can-do attitude! Great effort and it sounds like quite an experience.
