And on an off shoot of that thought - would it be showing respect to that office if a person went to meet the President looking like that? What would you wear if you had a chance to meet him? I'm guessing most guys here would wear a suit and tie. Why is that? |
because I would be inside. If I were to meet him outside I would likely have a jacket more appropriate for the weather, not the occasion.

I guess it would depend on the type of meeting and where it was. If it was in Nome, Alaska or Wobegon, Minnesota at an outdoor event in the winter, sure it probably would be appropriate.
I would probably wear a Suit and Tie. I don't own a fur lined parka

If he were coming to a jobsite where I work to see a project I was building, I'd be wearing jeans, steel toed boots and a long sleeve shirt. Nothing too fancy.
If I were going to the White House for an event? Nice dress or a suit (no tie).
If I were going to see him while I'm standing in a crowd of people? A little bit more dressy than casual. Probably khaki's and a sweater.
If I were attending an event in Auschwitz, Poland in sub zero temperatures? Fur lined parka and hiking boots.

should the firemen at the world trade center have changed. I remember W was pretty casual there and that was a pretty somber place.

Sorry I am late here on this but I don't see any problem with him wearing a Parka to an event that is obviously cold. Did I miss something?

Somewhere along the line, stained blue dresses in the White House are okay, but fur lined parkas on the Vice President aren't.

Just illustrating that this is all politics...nothing more. If it weren't, why the falling along political lines? No, it's not about funeral attire, it's about yet another "reach" from the left.
...by the way, as long as we're talking about attire, anybody ever get to the bottom of Dubya's "humpback lump"?
It's all politics. For 4-yrs we heard the left literally shout and demand we leave Bill Clinton's personal life out of how well he leads the country. And now the left is focused on the Veep's parka?! Somebody took a 180-degree turn on the turnpike. And believe you me, it wasn't me.

I have admitted when Dems have done wrong, and I have even given Bush credit for things he's done well. I have never seen you admit even one error of this administration. Even about something as simple and inconsequential as maybe Cheney could have dressed up a bit for a formal occasion.
The left is not "focused" on his parka; I raised the question of whether it was a big deal or not. I do think he looked like a doofus, but if you read back you will see I said it wasn't a huge deal.

Well, I grew up in Maine, and I live in pretty cold conditions here in MA on occasion. Not the coldest of conditions, but cold enough. Here's my take:
This argument that a more formal coat wouldn't shield him from the cold doesn't hold water. A cashmere coat and a scarf will keep you just as warm as a parka. It's not like he was camping outside overnight fercryin'
Do I think it's an international scandal? No. Do I think he should have made a better choice in attire to show proper respect? Yes.

Shouldn't "politics" (at least in the sphere of world governments) be about establishing the most effective systems to govern the needs of the masses?
I don't see how standing up on one side or the other of this "issue" leads to any kind of productive thought about the changes required to combat social injustices that exist around the world.
To me, the real issue in this conversation is that we could possibly see this as a "political" issue. Fortunately we live in a system that could potentially give the power of governance to the masses. Unfortunately, the majority of the populace prefers to be sidetracked by media created "soap operas" than to actually participate in governing themselves.
As I've said in other posts, this isn't a "Republican" or "Democrat" problem - its a human problem. And its a problem that the corporate media constantly exploits to help ensure that the balance of power stays in the hands of the few who look out for their interests.
And, I'll get off the soapbox now.... (its Monday - I needed to rant for a bit).

I think that it is silly that this is considered news-worthy...however, wearing the parka and dressing overall somewhat casually to such a somber, formal event was in poor taste.
