Posted: 10/11/04 - 08:43 Post subject: Big Canoe Duathlon Race Report
No long preamble... I did this race last year and I knew what I was getting into, but it seems that I've forgotten just how hilly this course is. Cliff's Notes at the bottom.
2 mi. run / 15 mi. bike / 2 mi. run (same course as first run except it's reversed)
I lined up close to the start. Gun goes off and I tried to hang with the lead pack but faded quickly because I didn't want to blow up early in the race. 1st hilly mile in 6:25. That's a little slower than I was hoping for so I picked it up a little. 2nd hilly mile in 5:54. Total 2 mi. time of 12:19.
In and out of T1.
On the bike, I got a little mis-cue from a volunteer and had to do a quick U-turn. Only lost a couple of seconds, so it wasn't any big deal. The bike course is super hilly, but not the same course as last year. Pretty early on, there's a huge downhill. I managed to hit a new PR top speed of 47 MPH. I wussed out and stopped pedaling because my eyes were watering pretty badly at that point. Then it was just more rolling hills. There was a group of 3 of us that loosely stayed together. None of us could seem to drop the others. Coming up on the turn around, I saw the leaders coming back on this out and back course. When I got to the turn around, it occurred to me that there were only a small handful of people in front of me that I'd seen on the return leg, that meant that I was in a top spot overall. :w00t:
Managed to drop one of the group of three and now it was just two of us grinding it out on the hills. Something was rubbing when I'd stand to pedal, so I released the rear brake. A few miles later, my saddle, which I'd adjusted the day before, goes nose down. Now I'm headed back up the 47 MPH downhill except going up, it was closer to 7-8 MPH. At that point, I managed to finally pull away from the other guy I'd been trading places with.
Pulled back into the park and was in and out of T2 in no time. 15 mi. bike split was 43:06 (20.88 MPH avg.)
Back out on the hilly run course. I was by myself the whole way, no passing or getting passed. I couldn't even see anyone ahead of me or behind me (it's a heavily wooded, very twisty course). 2nd 2 miles in 13:46 (6:43 pace).
7th overall out of ~100 people. Missed out on getting an age group award this year. I finished in 1:19:?? last year and got 14th overall and managed to get 2nd in my AG. I guess it all depends on who shows up on race day.
Cliff's Notes :: 2 mi run (12:19) / 15 mi bike (43:06) / 2 mi. run (13:26)
