Scroll down for Cliff's Notes.

4:45AM alarm goes off and I roll out of bed for some coffee and a quick shower before I'm out the door an hour later.

5:45AM In the truck for a 2 hr. drive up to the race site.

7:45 arrive at race site and set up. Looks to be a pretty small race. Good, I like 'em that way. Putz around transition area for 30 minutes.

8:15 head for starting line and listen to the race director give a few details about the course. Most important is this hill that's just around the corner and that we'll hit it twice. Once on the way out and once on the way back. The bike course is open to traffic, but there's no traffic in rural north GA on a Sunday morning, so that wasn't a real issue.

8:30 race starts and I jack rabbit the start. Make a quick left after a 1/4 mi. and see that the RD wasn't kidding about the hill. Shocked Holy crap! Trudged right on up and down the back side. The downs on some of the hills were so steep that I had to slow way down to keep from falling over. Part of the foot race is XC (which the website didn't mention). First mile was @ 6:30 (I was shooting for even 7's) and the 2nd was 7:30. 14:00 even for the first 2 mile leg.

Onto the bike and out of the park. The race website said moderately hilly. LIES! Hilly, really hilly. I was sure I could keep a 20+MPH avg for this course until I actually rode on it. Did I mention the hills? Avg. pace ended up being 18 MPH. That's slower than a normal training ride for me. I never ride in the smallest chainring normally. I was frequently on the smallest chain ring during this ride. From miles 4 thru 10, I was alone. No one behind me and no one in front. 1 guy passed me @ 10 and I stayed with him and then a lady passed us @ 12 and we hung with her. On this humongous hill right to wards the end, we passed a 16 y.o. on a MTB. The four of us pretty much hit the 2nd transition together.

Off the bike and bike into my running shoes. I was 3rd of the group of 4 to hit the trails again. The MTB riding kid passed me pretty quickly into the run but he faded fast and I re-passed him. I picked off the other two people in front of me in the first mile too and then I was alone again. No one in front and no one behind.

So that big ol hill I mentioned during the first leg of the race, I decided it wasn't worth the trouble to run up it. It was way too steep and my HR would have gone into the stratosphere. I was alone and wasn't concerned about losing or gaining a place. That's only the 2nd time I've ever walked during a race. Embarassed

Down the backside of that hill and around the corner and it was a 1/4 mi. push to the finish.

Cliff's Notes ::
My 2nd Duathlon - 2 mi. run/15 mi. ride/2 mi. run
Missed my goal of 1:15 (I thought the course would be flatter and wasn't partially XC, could have hit that goal otherwise)
Finish time of 1:19:57
14th overall out of 100 or so finishers. I finished 13th OA if you don't count the relay team that beat me. Got the 2nd place in my age group. Dancing Banana

Excellent report. Sounds like you had a good time. I can't even do bike events. The uphills hurt my quads too much.

Great job! To bad you didn't have some hills to challenge you. Very Happy (I'm convince the people who say "small hills" are sadists, not athletes, and sitting back laughing at the top of them)

i think only missing your goal by 4 min is pretty darn good, considering you walked up the hill at the end! Wink

sounds like fun, congrats on the finish!

Sounds like in GA they discuss hills like they do in NYC. Where "flat" is nonexistent, "somewhat hilly" means very challenging, "moderately hilly" means holy crap it's hilly as all hell, and "hilly" which means you better bring your own body bag with you 'cause, baby, you're gonna die.

Great report, great effort. thumbs up
