Decided to run a 10k rather than a tempo run. Went to visit my sister in Belleville. I did this run last year and thought it was a nice, challenging course. As I'm warming up, I see a lot of familiar faces from last year. I won this race last year after a string of truly disappointing 10k times...so of course, I would like to win again. This is a small race but also warming up is a nationally ranked ultramarathoner and someone who passed me at mile 4 of the Bellin 10k like I was running backwards. Also there was a woman that broke the age-group record at Grandma's half-marathon this year. I start chit-chat with this woman and a gentleman as we head toward the starting line.

BANG!!!!! we look at each other.....we started???? I guess so. Crap...I'm in the back. I'm sure I ran the first 100 meters like a scared rabbit. About 1/2 mile into the race I settle into the lead woman spot with about 4 guys well in front of me and 2 guys and a gal right with me. It's slightly windy and the girl has made a decision to tuck in behind me and let me do the work. Great! At the mile marker we go through at 6:09...which isn't too bad...so I decided to throw in a small surge to drop the girl. Nope, she matched me. I catch my breath and try again, nope....she is determined to stay in my draft. We are now against the wind and going uphill. I decide to pick it up for a 1/2 mile and it appears that I lost her. I'm running behind a young man ......drafting while I make sure that I have my breathing in check. There is still one hill left before the turn around and two guys pass me going up the hill (I suck at hills) but I catch up going down. At the turnaround, I get a glimpse that the girl is about 15-20 seconds behind and the course will be easier on the way back...so I don't have it won by a long shot. A mile four I look over my shoulder and determine that it's over....just maintain. But a mile 5, the guy I'm running with is pulling ahead. I spend the next mile trying to "catch" him.....but it isn't going to happen. The last 100 meters is straight in downhill with wind at my back. I decide to give one last push...38:50......a minute faster than last year!!!!!!

Sad hubby called to see how I did. When I told him my time.....he replies "did you give it everything you had" Mad what's up with that????

sue

ps: the ultramarathoner didn't run...she was spectating.....she had just run a 100k a week before.

Great run, Sue! Belleville is close to my old stomping grounds! I may have to remember this one for next year, if I don't get stuck with Paul and Joel... Wink

I'll buy you a six pack and a backpack to put it in if you can keep up with Sue.

Great job sue!! I know I'm a week late but that is typical of me. Good luck in your search for races in November. The only ones that I have seen around here are 5Ks. There is one in New London on the 16th if that interests you, fairly small, around 150 people or so, fairly fast course through the park on gravel and wood chips. If you are interested let me know I'll get you the race director's number.
