... because you, too, can be a racist.
Last night I had some conversations with my family about my parents and how they are doing. This morning at work, I went to get some coffee.
Getting on the elevator, I was lost in thought about the above, and hit the close the door button (I was the only one on). Just as it closed, it opened again. A woman gets on, saying, "Thanks for holding the door - thanks a lot for nothing." I DID NOT HEAR HER CALL FOR THE ELEVATOR. She gets off two floors later, and as she walks off she said, "F***ing white b***ard." Not sure which has me angrier - the racism (which, living in Chicago, I expect) or the other word.
Don't know who the woman is, but I'd know her again if I saw her. Of course, I won't expect to get any help from management for any help on this one either. But stuff likes this is going to make my decision to get out of here so easy as to be laughable.
End of this - rant/growling/whatever.

How does being a caucasian boy from a single-parent home make you a rascist??
Interesting how she thinks she can spout racial eptithets all day long, but if you had said something llike even remotely racial you'd have had your a$$ kicked.

Boy, you don't know how much I wanted to delete "caucasian boy" and insert "honkie" but that would have been insensitive.
I'd have been tempted to hit the Door Open button one more time - right after the woman left. We'd have had a meaningful discussion.
But how sorry has it become? Here's an example:
I caught part of an episode of The Apprentice. It was when the teams were separated by gender. The women's team had (still has, I believe) a black woman. There was a disagreement between her and one of the other women about how things should have gone in one of the competitions. The white woman used the phrase, "That's like the pot calling the kettle black." Immediately, Olarosa (a.k.a., Odorosa) shot back, "That's a racist remark!" No one called her out on that foolishness.
Folks, when there are people like her out there, the end of racism is nowhere in sight.

I hear ya. There are 5 women of color within earshot of my cube. I've gotten a couple of looks just for saying the word "black". Jeez, I'm only talking about ink colors for crying out loud!

The next time that you use the word "black," make sure to inform them that your black is spelled with a lowercase "b," and that you're referring to ink color. That should be enough. It will demonstrate your willingness to help maintain a workplace free from strife and hostility.

bet you can't top my story:
I worked with a black man that had 2 sexual harassments filed against him from my department. Because nothing was ever done, I decided to "deal with it" eventhough all my coworkers knew that I was his target. We had a VP come down from another office to have some heart-to-heart and I revealed some of the things this guy was saying to me.....she was shocked and asked why I didn't report it and I told her that I knew of two other women that have and nothing was done.
Here's what was done: He was moved to my team.
Here's the kicker: there is a reason why the company didn't do anything.
The guy already had a racial discrimination suit against the company.
To top it off: one of my coworkers (a gay male) hated this guy.....why you ask? they held the same position....everyone that held the position had a college degree..except this black guy. The company knew of this controversy. Anyhow the lawsuit is public record.....so this coworker made copies and distributed them. When I picked up the document on my desk.....I called over to him. "it's been nice working with you". Sure enough, the company had what they wanted. A reason to fire him.
So obviously my company felt that a racial lawsuit was riskier that sexual harrassment.
And eventhough I told the company that I did not read the documentations on my desk....I did. I made my own copy. The racial lawsuit? I think it was bogus and that it was a brainstorm of the guy himself.
I quit a few months later after they refused to let me go part time.
follow-up: Found out that the black man went the extra step and started calling a female coworker at home soon after I left. Supposedly he quit the company on his own accord.

It is sorry, yet re-assuring, to know I am not in this boat by myself.
An update - the manager brought me over to her desk, and said she heard I was PO'd, and wanted to know why. So I told her the incident.
She said, "Steve, that's just not like you to get mad; you are very quiet, probably the quietest person here (note - were there a smilie of someone scratching their head, it would go here). You come in, keep to yourself, and leave when the day is done." But, then I was mildly called on the carpet for be very loud (and apparently disturbing some people) when I called home. I apologized for the volume, but not what I said. (that I don't roll over and play dead for anyone).
Oh, and Maddie - I'm not from a single-parent family. Bob and Joan are alive, and while not in the best of health, are still OK. Must have had me confused with another retriever.

Absolutely true of most corporations. Then again, the NAACP has more legitimacy and credibility in most people's minds than NOW. And as a society, sexism is much more tolerated and accepted than racism, as it always has - note the 15th Amendment was ratified way 50 years before the 19th.
I'm all for everyone getting their due, but when it IS their due. Earn it. Quotas, affirmative action, and such do nothing but undermine the system they were trying to augment. You obviously suffered because of it; I know I have; a lot more have, too.
And sparky, I saw that "Apprentice" episode and laughed. Not because what she said was truly funny, but that this "educated" woman actually believed it.

Most people's minds? I guess I'm in the minority. Wow, I feel so downtrodden! Anyway, ya gotta wonder about an organization which would seek the advancement of "colored people." Really, now, isn't it time to rename the NAACP? If we're going to get politcally correct, let's do it properly.

Good ol' Odorosa. Have you ever heard her boast about going "from the ghetto to the White House?" What, did she take the Metro?
"I'm going to crush my competition and I'm going to enjoy doing it."
--Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth
Omarosa is a former political appointee in the Clinton and Gore White House. She currently works as a political consultant in Washington, DC. Omarosa had a humble youth, growing up in the projects of Youngstown, Ohio, but she eventually graduated from Central State University. She also earned a Master's degree from Howard University and is now working toward her Ph.D, which should be awarded to her in the spring of 2004. Omarosa's hobby is pageantry and she enjoys working as an image consultant who has successfully trained a Miss USA, Miss Taiwan and Miss Guyana.
A political consultant? My guess is that she's self-(un)employed.

Those things happen in the military. Overall we have some sharp troops represented by every culture.
There are a couple of jerks, who when called on the carpet for shoddy/nonexistent work will file congressional inquiries about racial injustice.
That me up.
And Elkid, as a female, 100% hispanic, I agree wholeheartedly that quotas are nothing but an insult and another way to enslave/control an entire group of people.

Doesn't it also suck that because you have a repuatation for being a generally easy-to-get-along-with person it seems you're not permitted to get fired up once in a while?? To heck with that!

I have a terrible feeling because I'm not wearing asbestos underwear but I'll ask anyway: who's being enslaved - those making up the quotas or those filling them?
