I don't get it.
I love baseball, but could wait to see it until all runners are in. | Baseball's the glamour sport, and it's less of a hassle on city services.
But the 'thon should have dibs for the reason you gave. |
I thought the Chicago Marathon was one of the bigger ones in the country?
I have this all wrong.

 | It's the biggest, even with the limit of 40,000.

Straight up Dawg! It's teh biggest and if you wanna tee off the marathoning community, I gotta believe messing with the Chicago course at the last minute is going to be just the thing. Baseball or no baseball, Pinkowski is a chump if he's willing to sacrifice his marathon course.

I think this event should trump a baseball game.

Of course the biggest unmentioned factor so far is:
The White Sox are Richie Daley's team
Mess with it or no, I'm running the 26.2 scheduled. I'll pants Richie if he tries to stop me. Ozzie too.
Edited to add - Doesn't matter if the course stays put. The fact he would consider a last-minute change to accommodate the Sox is going to cause Pinkowski to lose a lot of face in the Chicago running community, which is pretty substantial. And if you interpret lose face as losing future commitments from world-caliber 'thoners, then he's on shaky ground for keeping his job.

One game?!! Paaashaw. I gotta believe 40,000 runners, families, travel, hotel, restaurants, the whole shootin' match of the Chicago marathon is a much bigger impact on the city's economy than a single MLB game. Hotels on marathon weekend are over $300 and the minimum at most is two nights. Marathoners are a fickle bunch. You watch, he messes with the course this year, he'll have a marathon with 1/2 the number of runners next year then he'll be cryin'.

Pinkowski was interviewed on the local news tonight, as a part of the White Sox coverage. He was identified as director of the race, and was in fact filmed at the race HQ.
"If the game is at 1 (I thought the earliest it would be was at 3), we'll move the race to the east (gee, that's specific) to accomodate the baseball game."
See Casey. See Casey run. See Casey run his way out of his job. Run, run, run. Run, Casey, Run.

If it gets to a game 5, the 305pm or 705pm start will also depend on if the Yankees would be playing that day. The Yankees get the national viewing time. So if the Yankees would be playing, they would get the 705pm slot and the Sox would play at 305pm.
So we should hope for a Sox 3 game sweep. I doubt that will happen.
