The Montreal Expos will be moving to Washington D.C., in part because of a financial package which includes a new stadium built at taxpayer's expense.
Shouldn't taxpayers be allowed to vote on whether they want their taxes going toward building a new stadium for baseball owners?

Louisiana is shelling out $180 million to the Saints and I think building a new stadium in order to keep them in New Orleans. I don't think we had a vote on it.

Half the reason N.O. has the Hornets is because the good citizens of Charlotte voted NO to give them new digs.

Trust me...they are so hungry for a baseball team around here that taxpayers would probably vote to do it!
Whatever!

It was right as I moved here so I'm not completely sure, but, I think they did that here. THEN after the fact and after everyone was TICKED they moved something through so that all the money would come from an increased hotel and rental car tax, not property taxes. Because somehow that makes it better to milk the tourists we're always complaining there are too few of to pay for our unnecessary stadium. I don't understand this whole "everyone needs a new stadium" phenomenon. We currently have "the 8th wonder of the world" The Astrodome sitting vacant now looking as ancient as it is, but it can't be demolished because it is "the 8th wonder of the world"

It was voted on here and it didn't pass. But it was close.

Well, it's a representative democracy...the lawmakers put in charge were convinced to do it.
Maybe you would need a constitutional amendment to a state constitution to call for a referendum on such a matter.

GRR, I was JUST watching the news and the Mayor of DC was saying that "NOT ONE SINGLE DIME WILL COME FROM DC RESIDENTS!"

Yeah right. Once the team threatens to go elsewhere the city coffers will open like floodgates

You'd be lucky if that happens.
When they built the new Comiskey Park (a/k/a "The Cell") fr the White Sox, it was paid for by the State Legislature. One of the conditions is that if attendance doesn't clear a certain level, the Sox don't have to pay their annual payment to the State.
It's so close to the limit this year, supposedly, the big question is - do the games the Florida Marlins had to play there count toward this? No one has a clue. How typical Illinoise.

Well, maybe he wants to read the AP bulletin about the move. That's where I took my information from. Of course, most politicians aren't exactly known for telling the whole truth and the entire truth.
On the other hand he may be telling the truth. Maybe they mean U.S. taxpayers will foot the bill.
