Clif notes.. 1:36:32 (chip), 97th overall, 11-secs faster than Bart.

Long version... My halfM Pr was five years back, a dozen pounds lighter and lots more mileage going in, so a Pr wasn't in the cards but something I find myself doing more often recently is looking at the size of the race, run hard, and hope for a good placing. If I got in the top 100, I was going to call it a good day.

The weather was what I'd call perfect. Probably 60s the whole way. The course had some decent shade in spots, but pretty sunny. With a 7:30ish start it wasn't bad at all. The course though was like a spaghetti noodle dropped on a map of downtown. The twists and turns must have been a logistical nightmare for getting traffic controlled. Randy and I saw a fleet of tow trucks pulling cars off the course as we drove a pre-race check on some of the hills.

I lined up a few yards back from the front knowing all the corners early on would be a flurry of elbows farther back. The first few blocks were downhill and I found a good groove early. The recall function on my watch isn't working so I don't have splits, but I did stick close to what my average pace ended up being.

As for Bart Yasso, aside from being a source of debate over the legitimacy of Yasso-800s at coolrunning and being a Runner's World writer, I couldn't recognize him from Adam. Somewhere around mid-race a group of three runners, two guys and a gal, passed me and over the second half the race pulled ahead and got reeled in through water stops and hills (of which I'd push the downhill sides). One of the guys dropped off their pace around mile 9 and then two were left up ahead. I'll admit I was digging deep to keep a decent pace the last couple miles. I'd trained to run 13.1 and didn't do any overdistance for this one, so the legs were getting less willing with each block. Somewhere coming up to the 12 mile marker, I got a good focus and began picking up the pace to reel in some bodies before the end. I was in a no-man's gap and it took about half a mile to gain a couple runners. Judging by my watch, when I knew there was only 2-3 minutes left, I started my surge to the tape. I'm guessing it was about 12.8 miles where I got up on my toes and started running the tanks dry. Looking at the results, it was Bart and the woman he was running with who were the first to get my fly-by. At the time I heard the fellow say "What the...." as I clipped by, then I caught a couple more guys in the straight-away to the line. The only voice I heard was Joel, thanks dude. Ended up 97th, I'll take it...'sides, it made Bart 101st. Competitive snot? Yep.

10 Riff Raffers in one place... what a fubby mass we were. Great time meeting you all and here's to the next one!!

You are so funny!!! I didn't see this earlier when I caught that Bart reference in my other post.

Folks, lemme tell you, he didn't look like he was running on dry tanks, he just surged across that finish line past us, staring straight ahead like he was on a mission....which apparently, he was Wink I'm glad you at least heard Joel, I figured you were so in the zone you didn't hear anyone. Great race, buddy!

Very cool report jrjo. I guess Bart should have put a few more 800's under his belt before this run eh? It was great to meet you and your family. Hopefully we will get the chance to run together again sometime.

And judging on your ranking, John, it was a spectacular day. That's 97th out of over 1300 people! How cool is that!?! Amazing.

Loved your report! Especially the guy you mentioned who made the comment: what the.. as you left him in the dust!

And that's why you're the guru!!! (you have that on tape, now. if you ever need a fan club you can play it!) LOL!!!
