PostPosted: 02/24/04 - 20:27    Post subject: Band of Brothers
I just saw episode 7 "The Breaking Point" for the 2nd time last night.

Seeing Buck's gradual breakdown?? made me wonder how i could handle seeing so many buddies die right in front of my face. Then you have guys like Lipton (the 1st sergeant) who just steps up and kicks butt.

Then you also have loser's like that Lt. Dike who deserved to get fragged!

So how well do you think you could have handled what those real Heroes went through.

Please don't think I am belittling any other VFW but since this is one of the few movies that seems to show how it really was, it has really made me think and be grateful that I didn't have to go through that. Saving Private Ryan made me wonder the same things but I haven't watched that one lately. Plus Band of Brothers deals more with the friendships etc.

Personally, I think I would have some serious problems holding my buddy trying to tell him everything is going to be okay even as you watch them bleed out. Maybe military training would help to get you over some of that.

Sorry for the depressing thoughts here.

I will try and find a good joke to share to balance out the negativity of this post.

they just did it because they had too.

That is why they were heroes.

I agree with you whole-heartedly Cappy.

After so many years of watching the John Wayne type movies this show and Saving Private Ryan really woke me up to what it must have been really like.

I really think this has made me more appreciative of what all VFW's went through.

it does not get much more real. Ambrose could not have picked a better unit to write about. Although it does not take away from what the 14+million other dudes did.

It is just nice to see it from the guys who were there and not those who made the decisions i.e. the generals.

not much different.

Ambrose often cites this unit in other books about the ETO. He even mentions specifically Major Winters.

I have the book. I'd love to send it to you if you want to read it!
We have the entire series on DVD, and have been rewatching it lately. It is gripping in that these people are real and the things they did and experienced were real. A truly extraordinary group of men.

Edited to say when Florida's done with the book maybe he could send it on to any other RR'er who wanted to read it?

Thanks for the offer, but is sounds like that might be a book I will want to keep!

I guess I could see if the local Library has it.

Absolutely. Book and movie are very, very close. Stephen Ambrose's story made me want to visit Frank Winters and shake his hand and say, "Thanks."

Richard "Dick" Winters is being reconsidered for the Medal of Honor.
A PA resident also. Still alive.

We have the book & dvd collection. Hubby loves them, as do I, although the episodes always make me so sad, seeing what those men went through. All war movies get me like that though. I don't think I've ever gotten through one of them yet without crying.

Band of Brothers is one of my fav. books on WWII. Carwood Lipton lived out his later years not too far from here in the sandhills of NC until he passed about 2 years ago. He was close with the parents of a friend of mine.

Where the hell did I get Frank? Oh, yeah...NFL offensive lineman. Apologies to all.
Yes, I was aware that Dick Winters was alive and in Pennsylvania.
Anyone familiar with the stort about Winters and the Canada goose?
