I just hate this get evenism attitude. Some legitimate sports are being canceled at the expense of keeping some sports that are for women only.

As long as more mens sports get canceled than womens in the name of being fair and trying to represent the campus, it is unfair.

It is the same thing as quotas or entrance systems in grad schools and the like.

It just sucks to be man anymore. We have to pay for all the differences of the past and now it has swung the other way.

This country did not become great because of diversity, it became great because of excellence.
In cutting some sports for men just to keep some for women is absurd and unfair.
Then again colleges are not known for making sense or being fair.

Joe, I'll agree with you to a point. But, what if some people were never given the opportunity to excel? I agree it's not fair to punish a current generation based on past inequities but then what is the solution?

(And now I really have to go...this is an interesting thread.)

Apply the standards fairly. I understand in Div 1 schools football and baseketball for men are the bomb. They also generate huge money for the schools, conferences AND the NCAA.

Frankly, I do not think any sports should be canceled only to comply with stupid rules. Then again their are certain sports like wrestling that is for men only and is getting canceled because of that.

I also know statistically colleges are like 60%female but more men play sports statistically only because if a school as a football team, it has a large roster, the largest of the sports which would skew the system if they do it that way.

It is really about giving more women sports scholarships for sports as opposed to the money making sports such as football and baseketball.

I am not lessening womens sports, but if a school wants to make money and field some competitive teams in some of the bigger sports (womens baseketball included) do they really need to give a percentage of scholarships for womens fencing just to keep it fair.

Besides most sports do not charge admission anyway. At Villanova the only sports that charge money are football and baseketball, every other sport is free admission.

Do you people have any idea of the burden that a white male has to carry in our society?

I didn't think you did. In that case, this is my last post.

Not just because of the Title IX or white male thing, but because I find Shelf's moderating style to be unfair and I also can't believe how all of you just sit there and enable him by letting him get away with those anti-Swayze remarks.

Do you know what really ticks me off about Title IX sports?

Is when they have to cut a program because a gay priest at a Catholic university that votes mostly republican ends up ruling against the latino female school president that had an abortion who opted to keep the sport because her atheist sister, that was also in an inter-racial marriage, decided that the sport was valuable to poverty stricken students that came from high schools that used voucher programs all because he stopped by cross country practice one day and saw the kids taking a break and decided that they would never be elites because all they were
doing in his eyes was gallowalking.

All of this after after he finished second and lost $20,000 to the football coach in a university front office Fantasy Football League that used percentages instead of pure yardage and touchdowns.

(this should get us to page 5)

I really don't believe that women's sports have excelled at the detriment of men's sports. In fact, in this type of a situation the administration are making a decision to not fund a womens sport by discontinuing funding 1 men's sport. Womens sports are not benefitting and the only ones who might are probably the larger mens sports. I don't think being a man in this sistuation is the disadvantage. Possibly being a cross country athlete is hard these days but I still don't think tables have completely turned.

I think many schools without title IX would look at only the bottom line as to how they choose teams they support, as in, which are going to bring in the most money. Which of course would eliminate all womens sports (including womens basketball with the rare exception of maybe Tennessee and UConn and a few others) and probably most of mens besides football if they had the choice. Title IX just says that they'll at least give women the same opportunities. Read flarunner's link.

I just think that in the age of close to 50 % of our country being overweight, cutting athletic programs is ridiculous.
College is about and education in the classroom but also about lessons in life. Unfortunately some of the lessons are, sorry your sport is not that important anymore and we are more interested in diversity, fairness and PC.

Just follow the money I always say. If a minor sport like XC gets canceled I am sure if the school had a bunch of their XC almuni complain and not donate something would be done. Yet if a stink is made because the womens curling team is being canceled and people fuss because of Title 9 and they reinstate it is absurd

Couldn't they just have the girls from the ex-curling team serve water to the football players on the sidelines?

Wouldn't that solve everyone's problems?

Seriously,

The girls get an avenue that fosters a constructive use of their time, builds self-confidence, and helps them develop the skills they will need for the rest of their lives.... just like sports!

And the football players, who are thirsty, get something to drink.

Win/Win.

Howevah, Shurl is on to something.

Maybe after each game, the players could vote off one of the girls. Or have the girls automatically kicked out of school if their BMI goes 25% above the midpoint of the "Normal" range. But girls with big hooters could get automatic immunity or something. This would make it competetive like sports.
