I want a PR and I want to not get passed by a 5yr old, a woman pushing a double stroller, and a 70+ year old lady in the final half mile like my first 5K. Embarassed

I actually don't like to race. It's a lot of anxiety. I have to constantly remind myself I'm just there to run for myself, but it's hard to stay mentally on top of that when everyone is flying ahead. I'm not great at the mental challenge a race can bring.

But, if I'm in a race with someone I know that is close to my pace then I like to at least beat them (like Novia in the CH - I've beat her almost every time! Very Happy).

I'm a tweener.

Up until now, I've been shooting just to finish. Over the winter I'm going to work on speed so next year I can shoot for a strong showing in my AG.

Well I run races now to meet certain time goals, regardless of where I finish with respect to other runners. My long term goal is to beat everyone.

Yeah, but you still are a good runner. Razz

When I set goals (as in a specific time) for a race is when I get into trouble. I think if I was running a 'thon, for example, with a target pace of 9 minutes a mile, and at 15 miles I was at a 10:00, I would totally panic. I'm not sure how to overcome this reluctance. Any advice anyone has will be most appreciated!
