By the time you figure up the price of the gun and ammo, a license, gas and lodging (if necessary) and all of the other incidentals plus having to pay someone to render the meat for you, what does a pound of venison cost? How much edible meat does the average deer have?

It doesn't matter how much it costs, like anything else that a person enjoys doing, they will pay for it regardless. For me it isn't too expensive to hunt. I own the land and stay at home. I pay for the license and an extra tag, 3 tags, about $35 I think, maybe will use 3 boxes of shells at around $2 a box. I cut up my own deer and do all the grinding of hamburger also. I would say on the average a person gets about 60 - 70 lbs of meat from a deer, provided they are harvesting at least a 2 year old deer.

I know that most do it for enjoyment because I don't think it could be considered an economical way to get some protein in your diet. I was just curious about what the average hunter lays out in a year and how much meat they bring home.
BTW - I think the GA limit for deer is 5.

I gave up deer hunting sometime ago, but at one time I was a fairly avid hunter. I never once thought to calculate the cost per pound. But I know this much, if there wasn't deer hunting in Texas within a few years we would be overrun with deer. I think the Texas limit is one buck, two does and two doe/spikes...but it has been a long time since I have had a hunting license.
I bet Robp has a good post about this.
