They were donated by Pontiac. She didn't pay a dime. Great marketing on Pontiac's part.

If she really wanted to pull a big surprise, there would have been some men in the audience.

I don't care who paid for any of it. It just goes to show that people cre about other people.
The haves have finally given to the have nots.
I am humbled by the generosity shown.

You assume two things:
1. That all of the audience members were 'have nots'
2. That they (Pontiac & Oprah) did this without any consideration of future benefit.

She could still afford it even if they weren't donated

1. The article says the audience was carefully chosen from letters sent to Oprah.
2. You get what you give. Give sh1t, get sh1t. Give niceness and get it 2 fold.

The original link didn't give out that detail. It was very vague.

To think that it was done entirely out of kindness without any concern for marketing or ratings is a bit naive IMO.
I'm not saying that it isn't a good deed, but I question why Oprah and Pontiac took the opportunity to do this on a show, as opposed to doing something behind the scenes,...

Evrything Oprah does is on a show. Think about it, even if she had done it privately it would have still been publicized! That's the story of her life.
