Posted: 11/26/04 - 10:08 Post subject: Atlanta Half Marathon Race Report
The race preperation started the night before my wife surprised me with an early borthday present of Sugoi cold weather gear (jacket, tights, top and gloves!). Man were they needed. I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and headed out to the starting line at 5:00am. I sat in my car until 6:15 because it was 37 degrees with a 25-30 mile an hour wind. I almost talked myself to go home because it was so cold! We stood on the Cairmont Road bridge with the 9 minute pace group until the race was off at 7:00am.
The race started right at 7:00am and the first mile was brutual because of the crowd. I ran the first mile in 12 minutes. After the third mile it spread out and I was able to run at a good pace. I didnt keep my mile splits this race beacuse the first mile was so slow. I should have! The first 7 miles were reallitvely easy because its flat and then starts down hill.
At mile 7 is were the fun began! It's all up hill from there. It all starts with Cardiac hill those that have run the Peachtree know why its called cardiac hill. I ran all the way up the hill while people around me were crashing! From there it was up hill to Scarlet O'hilla by the Fox theater. I hit the 10 mile mark at 1:31:35 and I figured I could break the 2hr mark if I can just stick to the pace! I started to enter the Georgia State University area and the wind was really whipping thru the buildings. At 1 point I was running forward but was going sideways. On past Underground Atlanta and I hit the last hill CAPITAL Punishment!
Now I now why they call it that! My legs were so tired I had to take a 1 minute walk break (This cost me the sub 2Hr mark!) I got to the top of the hill ran down the home stretch running past the Olympic torch! What a feeling I had! I crossed the finish line! Final time 2:00:09! Just missed it......
All in all I am pleased with my effort since this a grueling course From mile 7 to the finish you climb almost 300ft in elevation!

By the way there weren't a ton of spectators but those that were there were great! Giving encouragement and High 5's! What a feeling and great way to start Turkey Day!

running against the wind - but still a great time in spite of the hills and the nasty gusts.

Sounds like a BRUTAL course and not great conditions, but an excellent effort and race by you. Congrats!

Nice race Bill. Running in the wind and uphill is tough. You gave a nice effort

Sorry Bill.
I did spend a litt;e bit of time at Piedmont and Monroe and saw the first runners come by. I actually saw one of my skater buddies without planning on it. yes it was cold. i wanted to run this but had the flu so i had to bail out. I was happy on my decision after feeling the cold and the wind that day. OMG. man
