Posted: 08/20/03 - 13:55 Post subject: Asheville Vacation Reports (w/pics)
A crazy fun-filled vacation full of drinkin til 5am-ers, scenic hikes, popular touristy stops and tearin up a wedding reception (sorry, no 'ring-spitting' to report...)
Below are some internet pics/camera pics. We haven't developed our 4 rolls yet but when we do I'll post some more.
I can't say enough incredible things about Asheville (and N. Carolina). The GREENEST state I've evah been to. It's like a small town with all the big city benefits. Tons of music, culture and nightlife, and yet quaint, friendly and incredibly easy to get around.
Add to that was the fact that this was really a true reunion of old friends. Peeps I used to hang out with. Peeps that used to be my bestest buds. So it was a great feeling to be around old friends like that and it was like we never lost those years we spent apart.
Anyway, homeless folks would walk up to you and if you gave them money, they'd sing you a song. Needless to say, hearing the full version of Metallica's 'One' was definitely a highlight of mine . We would later run into 'Johnny' where he walked away rejected saying 'I seen it all! White folks without money! Sheeeiiittt....'
The wedding was a blast. Just a perfect day. They had rented this posh art gallery called 'On Broadway' and everything took place there...the service, reception y pictures...Since we're all musicians, they had set up instruments and throughout the night we'd all jump up there and jam some Beatles and other delights. The DJ rocked. And I of course broke out the breakdancing and lead the 'Locomotion' which I must proudly say that we got about 80% of the crowd participatin.
Here are some places we sight-saw...
Grandfather Mountain
The Mile-High Swinging Bridge: The 228-foot suspension bridge spans an 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation.
They also had a habitat there featuring otters, bald eagles, a panther and 8 bears. And get this, we got to feed the bears! You'd buy a little baggie of dried apples and they'd just sit down there like a fat guy sitting on a lazy-boy waiting for us to throw down food. It was like some strange carnival game cuz they wouldn't move to catch the food. If it didn't come within inches of their mouths, they wouldn't even try for it. HA! Can't wait to see those pictures!
------
Linville Caverns
Even though our tour guide was about as personable as a cactus, it was still VERY cool (and cold...witness, packer backer?)
-----
Biltmore Estate
it was the place everyone just HAD to go...so we did. I loved it. The architecture, the design. Simply amazing. (Mtv Cribs got nothing on this place!) 36 unique fireplaces...each room inspired by an artist/politician or war general...Quite a difference between the master bedrooms and the servants bedrooms in the basement...
------
scenes around Asheville:
Not alot of graffiti here, but there was some. This was my favorite.
"each employee's hands must be washed thoroughly using clean, warm water and sanitary towel or approved hand-drying device before beginning work and after each visit to the toilet."
Man, were they every strict about employees washing hands! I found this sign in EVERY bathroom in the town.
that first night we got there we did a bunch of bar hopping and at each corner there was some kind of spectacle. This was my favorite. Some wise-ass fella juggling fire....
Here are my good friends Kelly y Todd cutting thy cake.
buddies Chad and Eric dressing eachother...
More pics to come!
And get this...We came home to a brand new puppy!!! Joy's sister bought a 2 week old pug and realized that it just wasn't working out (she recently gave birth and was trying to control her two other kids)... We dog-sat for her a couple weeks ago and fell IN. LOVE. with Pippi. When we dropped her off we mentioned that we sure wouldn't mind taking her off her hands...Well, when we got back yesterday and stopped over, she decided that it was the best thing for the doggy!!!
Thanks for reading! If you're working right now, your company just paid you to read this!

What a cool trip! I would love to road trip with you guys!
And congrats on your new puppers!! Although I mis-read the name at first. I think since it's a puppy Pippi might end up sounding a lot like peepee.
Good luck on your new furry child. Are you throwing a puppy shower?

Unfortunately pfff...it wasn't as 'swingy' as I was hoping for... but still hella-scary...Especially when the winds would come a-whirlin!!!
So I'm just elated that I'm a dog-owner again. However my 'elation-level' was pretty low on the charts after Big Pippin peed on our couch and dropped a duece in my exercise room yesterday.

Yeah, they can be bullyish sometimes but I like that 'pizzaaz', RR!
Now, we're just hoping that our cat comes out of the basement and makes friends with her. ( i smell a Disney movie in the makes)...
Anyone know any tips on how to get a cat and dog to 'bond'? (and don't say superglue )

You got to do a little bit of everything! Friends, outdoors (underground caves and mountain tops), art/architecture, animals, nightlife...
You should start your own travel guide series. Fodors. Frommers. Shelflifers.
Glad to hear you had such a nice vacation!

Glad you enjoyed your visit to good ole North Carolina.
Witness on the temps in Linville Caverns. You'd think they could get heating in there or something!

Great tips! I'm glad you had such a great time with your old friends.
Now to the important things...your pup is soooo cute! I have 3 cats, and 3 dogs. The cat just needs some time. She has to show you her great displeasure of moving such a worthless animal into her home. Eventually, she'll come out, give the pup a good smack, and all will be well. My 12 year old cat runs the dogs. I love watching this 7 pound creature prevent the 80 pound lab from getting a drink, or getting on the couch. It's great fun.
